Bad Non members beware

I may catch flak for this, but, "please go away". If you have formed a dislike already, I do not believe you will be an asset but a detriment. :( I know others have welcomed you as is the norm here (and also for me) but, in case you stay, I will use the ignore function. BYE! I know, fellow members, I'm being rude; so be it.

I don't want to discriminate, but if it's a choice between a paying member with a history and a non-paying member with no history, guess who I'm more likely to sell to? Or a non-paying member with history. Especially if I've done business with that person before. Actually, history means more to me than membership status. By "history", I don't just mean feedback, but also presence in the rest of the forum. But a paying member is definitely no guarantee of the party being legit, as many times people have been ripped off by a paying member. $30 is a small investment if you can scam hundreds or thousands of dollars with of stuff.

It's not personal.

If the sale didn't include "first I'll take it gets it", which BTW, nobody should EVER put that in a sale listing IMO, then the seller was under no obligation to sell to you.

You didn't get a knife you wanted...it happens....life goes on.

Let me guess........something you wanted to buy was posted for sale and you tried to get it. The seller refused the transaction because of your low post count, short membership and lack of paid subscription?
It happens and until you interact with the forum, buy a membership and generally increase your activity it will probably continue that way.

I live in South Africa and when I joined back in '08 I was regularly denied a sale because of the international shipping problems. I was always polite and never made a fuss about it. Indeed I often I found that after the seller rejected my offer and then got my polite reply they came back and said...."It's yours"

Even with 10 years of Platinum membership and over 50 positive feedback posts, as recently as 6 months ago a seller rejected a sale to me saying he did not want any complications. I politely thanked him and moved on......life is too short.

No offence but coming here after 11 posts and complaining about it will not endear you to the membership. Suck it up, contribute, subscribe to Gold and things will change.

huh? I've always been treated well here. by the old timers who've been here since the beginning and the new comers as well. if hadn't been I wouldn't have hung around for what around 8 years or so now.

both chit chatting on the forums and buying here.

I lurked Bladeforums for a few months without even registering. I was soaking up information and getting to know the tone of the place. I finally registered (non-paid) because I needed some sharpening guidance. I started a thread in MTE (Maintenance, Tinkering, & Embellishment) as my first post, and the folks there were the warmest & friendliness guys in the world.

After that I continued to read a lot and post a little for a few months before wandering into the Exchange. I read the rules thoroughly and lurked here (GBU) to figure things out, mostly because I didn’t want to get screwed.

When I finally made a purchase (still without a paid membership), I didn’t quite folow the seller’s rules...he was kind enough to redirect me. I could have gone away butthurt and started a bitch thread...instead I had a D-oh! moment of epiphany, and we completed the transaction smoothly.

I still love that knife!

Knife transactions with nameless internet avitars require a degree of bidirectional trust that doesn’t come naturally. Most people here understand that and have been uniformly cool to me as I’ve negotiated deals. Some of those deals haven’t worked out and we’ve politely gone our separate ways.

I’ve probably earned myself a slap once or twice along the way. I could name a few folks that deserve a beer for my shenanigans, but this is tl;dr so I doubt any of them will notice. ;)

I'm new to the knife game. Looking to get involved. However as with any new relationship it's how you get treated in the beginning that makes you decide if you're going to stick around or not LOL. Every member on here their feedback started at 0 just like mine. My suggestion would be if members are selling only to members that should list that way. Or the thing to do would be to make the group closed to where you can read only but to interact and send messages you pay a fee and join just like eHarmony LOL.

Actually, yes, while many of us DID start with zero feedback, many of us contributed to the forum with a paying membership and then stuck around, wracked up a significant post count and got to be known around the forums. You know, participation. I'll be candid, I don't see any issue with what the other member did, because I'd MUCH rather sell to an established, participating member instead of someone (like you) with 11 posts, no participation, no skin in the game, not really anything. And I would certainly never trade with a complete ghost, nothing personal.

So, if you have an issue with how you were treated, let's not act like you're a victim. You know full well how you can stop this from happening going forward: start participating, spring for a basic membership, become a known quantity on this board. It's not hard. I'd say welcome, but...ya got 11 posts (a few of which are this thread whining because someone wanted to sell their knife to a fellow contributing member and not you), so I don't know what else to tell you, guy. Good luck with all that.

Sounds like maybe you're only involved in purchasing knives, in which case there is a preference for established members because of reduced risk. It's pretty common for online, personal transactions and many forums have such measures.

If you get involved in more discussions, you'll likely get better responses on the exchange. Also, not having a paid membership doesn't give you access to private messages, which is less common and does hinder your ability to purchase items.

Keep in mind, there's a risk for the seller too and that's why we are often leary of new forums members, like yourself. It's not to offend you, it's because we don't know you and there's a lot of bots that jump in, or a sketchy person that has changed their username and tries to stiff people. It's not common but it has happened and we're aware of it.

Relax, read, write some, and enjoy. This isn't a site solely for exchanging knives thought there are members that do that. If you want to only be part of that end of the community, a paid membership will help you out a lot.

There's always eBay and many online knife vendors that sell new, used some even take trades on just about anything you could want. Missing out on a knife on bladeforums shouldn't cause you to lose sleep

I have been buying and selling on here for about 5 months and in the beginning the sellers I spoke to informed me of the unwritten rules (Thanks Matt! @BuckleBuilder ). A couple took a chance on me and I had so much fun, I signed up for a gold membership.

Since then, I've bought/sold/or traded over one hundred knives and I've had an awesome experience along the way. I've had an opportunity to try out some of the coolest knives made without having to shell out full price to a retailer and usually being able to get my money back out of things I ended up not loving.

If you're just here to buy and sell, that's cool but you have to pay your dues. If the seller is an established member offer to pay via f&f to set their mind at ease (and save them a few bucks) via USPS Money Order since that eliminates the chance of a chargeback. They still may decline but it's worth a shot and doesn't cost you anything. I also breed reptiles and that hobby is full of scammers (both sellers and buyers) so I know how bad things can be.

Remember, these folks work hard for their money and have invested in these knives. They are offering them up on the exchange to pass them along to fellow enthusiasts and to recoup some of their investments. Nobody is here to get rich (trust me, it's impossible) but this truly is an awesome hobby with a great group of members and contributors. I typically can find any knife-related information I'm looking for just by searching the archives and all this info is free! I have also made some great friends through this site all over the world.

With all that said, I'm not sure you're really cut out for this forum if you came here complaining about such a non-event. Deals come and go and I can promise you that you'll find more in the future if you stick around. If you don't, no worries. We'll continue to be the best place on the internet for knife enthusiasts.
