Northwoods Fremont Jack...Need Comparison Pics.

The patina looks amazing with these. Something about the scale selections, the blade finish, and the patina just does it for me.

Nice collection, and that's a great photo for size comparison. Doesn't look like mine will make it in this week, but I'll be happy next week when it arrives.

I asked KSF about a white bone as well... crystal ball is out of service atm. ;)
I had #41 in yellow camel in my cart for a couple of days. Working my way up to pulling the trigger. When I thought I had convinced myself (trying to save money now... not spend it... like always... lol!) I went back to take a look and someone snagged it.. wasn't meant to be... :(

I really want to push the button on a Fremont but the scales just aren't there for me. I don't know what would do it - white bone would. Stag from previous runs looks really good. Black micarta would be classy. Black ebony would be sweet. Cocobolo would look good. The mammoth ivory looks awesome of course but cost of entry isn't for everyone and I use/carry my knives a lot. Oh well, I'm sure there will be more runs. It's a popular pattern for sure!

Is that an Indian River Jack sitting below that Fremont Jack?

I may have to buy one of those after I get that Burris rifle scope and Lijia barel I am saving for.

Thanks! Here's a more complete look with a few different models, if someone is looking for a different comparison.

It is! It's got a really awesome and unique bark on the mammoth. The F&F on the two IRJ's I have aren't quite as nice as the GEC-made Northwoods I've owned - they both came with very, very stiff pulls that felt like the pivot pin was too tight - the pull being rougher due to friction and not spring tension. Oiling helped some, and I loosened the pin on the other because it's one I carry. You can see the pin from being loosened in the first picture on the smooth mammoth.

I hope what hartlogan has isn't contagious. I can't afford that kind of sickness... :)

Haha. Everytime I think I may have too many knives, I just come here, and see that I'm nowhere near as sick as I could be. There's hope for us all :)

Hahaha I was going to say I've sold a few of those, but unfortunately 2 doesn't equal a few!!

One of these days I'm sure I'll come to my senses and put half my collection up on the Exchange - best way to share the sickness :)

That is quite a collection!

Why, thank you Mr. Head Enabler, sir! :D

If you would start ordering runs of these in cool handle materials like Poop Brown Trash Bag Plastic and Plain Black Chair Fabric and making them with 15 blades and serrated edges, you might just cure my sickness. But oh no, you insist on churning out these ugly mammoth and camel and stag knives with fantastic design and I feel obligated to keep buying them just to prevent others from owning them and experiencing the horror of their ugliness!

you are going to be sick for a long time. :)

I am not sure how it will age. I am guessing it will age like other bone.

Camel bone is more dense than regular cow bone and doesn't take dye as well (which is why it looks so cool). So I don't think it will hold up better than cow bone.

Just so I get an idea from someone who owns many, how many of the knives in this picture have blades that are perfectly centered?

In my experiences and observations with traditional knives, blade centering isn't prioritized among most manufacturers and consumers, especially compared to something like blade rub. On my modern folders I care but don't even look for it in my traditionals. Just my 2 cents!

I honestly couldn't tell you. I can tell you how many have blade rub, and that's one - the Presidential.

What do you consider perfectly centered? Do you measure? Eyeball? What's your level of tolerance? Mine is that the blade isn't completely over to one side. If it's a smidge off and still works perfectly, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. Are you worried about aesthetics? Collector value? Resale? I generally buy my knives to be carried and used, with a few exceptions. So if it works and won't impact use, it's all good.

All that said, neither opinion is right or wrong or better or worse. That's the nice part about this place and addiction, everyone has a unique take on it :) I'm just curious what your reasons are for the preference.

Here's a few pictures I have that might show you examples. I don't take many of the centering unless I'm selling or are trying to show width comparisons.

Fremont that I cut loose:

Clockwise from top left:
Madison Barlow
Fremont
Indian River Jack
Presidential (you'll notice how thin this is for a two-blade knife, thus the small bit of blade rub doesn't bother me - where the secondary blade's base hits the main blade, bottom left)

I use all of my knives also and no pocket queens. I center by eye and if it looks down the middle to my eye, it's good for me. I have a few that are off center but every once in a while you would like one down the middle and at that price, which is alot for me, I want to see it centered down the middle for peace of mind.

Maybe use your other eye? :D

Good luck finding what you're looking for mate, there's definitely plenty out there that are centered. As I've said, I don't have many (if any) Northwoods that are noticeably off-center via a quick glance.
