NWA knife passaround

Cool, thanks Flix. It's good to see the comparison shots too, so people can get an idea of the size

Damn it.

Nick has done it again. He made the knife I was going to try to make.

I just got the passaround knife and it looks great. I have been thinking for months now that I want to try to make a 2 to 2 1/2 inch length neck knife very probably with similar lines to the NWA knife. This looks great.

I wish I got it on Friday so I could have brought it up with me to NH this weekend and play with it in the woods. I will try to get out and take some pics and use it soon.

One thing Nick. The sheath is very nicely done but I personally think it is too thick and heavy for the rig to be used around the neck. Again, my personal view seeing it and I haven't actually tried it yet so my view may change. Would a smaller, flatter Kydex sheath be possible?

Oh yeah and thanks for the hat HuntFlix.

God stuff Keith, I like your idea on the sheath. There is only one problem though. I've never worked with kydex. That is not saying I can't or I could have someone else make the sheath.

So what is your thoughts on the choil notch?

Nick:)

It is usable by me but it is small. I would really worry if I had to choke up on the knife and apply pressure that I would slip off even with my small hands. For what its worth I wear large gloves but I really think my hands are probably smaller than most guys. I think it does need to be bigger to be used as an effective choil if one is wanted. I still haven't actually gotten it outside yet so I probably should wait to say more. It is definitely a top quality piece of work. I was looking at the finish on the handle (the metal to skin finish) trying to understand how you do that with the finger groves and I still can't figure it out. If its ground or polished or both. The other thing I wonder, I know I am wondering out loud, is if the knife needs to be that high? What if was maybe half or 3/4 as high? Probably the same thickness though that is up for discussion also. I personally would not change the length of either the blade or overall length. Smaller, lighter, still plenty beefy, again these are the random thoughts of a neophyte who hasn't actually put the knife through its paces yet.

Just bear in mind that my overall impressions are definitely positive. Like an 8 out of 10 for usefulness and at least a 9 out of 10 for quality and construction and thats only because I don't know what a 10 is supposed to be. These are ideas that might make it more useful to me.

Keith

The choil was never really designed to be used as a "choke up" it was simply a cosmetic thing to sweep in the plunge, rather than have a sharp line there.
I know some like it and some don't, I just sort of thought it looked cool as you see a few of swamp rat knives with that smaller choil and I've just always wanted to make one, with that incorporated in to it.

I'm not quite sure what you mean when you say having the blade not so high. Do you mean not having a blade that is a bit more narrow?

Thanks again for your feedback:thumbup:

Yeah, I know. I was trying to figure out how to say this. There is the length which everyone agrees on. Then the width or thickness of the blade. I think we agree on what I am trying to say. Now, the other dimension, the height of the blade. The measurement from spine to sharpened edge.

A picture as they say. Hope this makes it a little clearer. The blade does look good and I don't have a problem if it isn't actually a choil. I just thought that was what it was. It looks fine and I suspect that it would work good for throwing sparks with the firesteel but I don't want to try that without an OK.

I can see in tknifes picture that the proportions looked good so maybe I need to look at it again. It was just when I held it it seemed that the height was somewhat out of proportion to my knife but of course I have a 4 inch not 5 inch version also. Like I said I really need to use it.

We are on the same page with the blade now Keith:thumbup: But, one thing, you say you have a 4" (I know you do as I made it for ya:D) But I thought we were talking about the width or height of the passaround knife:confused:

Thanks, and sorry if I'm sounding stupid here.
Nick:)

I think I see what you mean Keith, that the comparison pic with my original forum knife makes the proportions look different?

Not at all Nick. I know that I am having trouble explaining exactly what I mean. Its difficult to explain. tknife posted the picture I am talking about.

You do look like you scaled the proportions on his three knifes. Of course I think that tknife has a 5 inch blade. I am not talking about a change in blade length or overall length which I like, lots. I am talking more about the height of the blade which I am wondering if it would work better if it wasn't as high. The width was only mentioned as a possiblity to also lighten the knife and maybe keep it in proportion when the height changes. The other thing I have to say to have this make sense is that I don't believe that this knife has to stay in proportion to be a nice necker. Maybe a change in the height independent of the other dimensions would make it still a very good knife. This is all very academic at this point. I guess the bottom line is that I am wondering if it is going to be heavy and bulky for a neck knife especially with the leather sheath but I really won't know until I get to use it. I have been handling it and like I said it is a really nice knife. I hope this helps a little to explain what I was thinking.

Looking forward to getting out and playing with this knife soon.

Keith

I got ya now Keith. I look forward to reading your response after you've had a chance to use it. By the way how is the edge holding up? Is it still sharp?

Nick:)

Sharpeye said he stropped it and it is still shaving sharp right now. Great edge on it.

Sorry guys for taking so long. I have only been out with it once and only for and hour during lunch. Very busy right now. I created an excellent fuzz stick with it with no problems at all. Tried to get a picture and the new camera wouldn't focus close enough to get a decent photo of it.

I really like the knife and would like to use it longer but if the next person on the list doesn't want to wait any longer I understand. Just wanted everyone to know that I didn't forget I had this. :D:thumbup:

Let me know.

Keith

tsf, I believe your up. I haven't had much time to play with this knife but it isn't fair for me to keep holding onto it. I am going to try to get out a couple of more lunches and than pass the knife on. I'll post my opinion then.

Keith

Sorry guys I have been sick with a abscessed tooth that still hasn't cleared up and incredibly busy. I need the next address to send this knife too so someone can get out and use it more than I have been able or probably will in the near future.

I believe that I need TSF's information because I think he is next in line. Correct?

Keith

I have sent Nick an email to try to send the knife either to tsf or back to Nick.

Regards,
Keith

Hi Keith, sorry to hear about your bad tooth man. I know exactly how you feel. You can send it to me or to tsf. It really doesn't matter to me.
My shipping address is as follows
Nick Allen
6709 Chicago Rd
Warren MI 48092

Like I said either way is fine, but if it does end up coming to me. I will need the address for tsf.

Thanks
Nick:)

Quick update: tsf hasn't been around, and hasn't responded to PM's or email so next in line is JerkeeJoe. Nick is getting the knife back, then it will be shipped on to Joe when his address is received. Just a little bump in the road, but we'll get this back on track ;)
