NWA knife passaround

I have been out of commission and out of state. I sent Nick an email today telling him I will be sending the knife back tomorrow via UPS. I will send him the tracking number once I send it.

Man, being at the end of this list is tough! ;)

Can't wait, and look forward to trying this one out!

kr1, sorry to hear about the tooth. NOT a fun thing to deal with. Tknife and NWA, thanks for working on this and allowing us to share this blade!! Delays don't worry me, as I am sure is the same with the rest priveledged to be on the pass around list! Thanks again!!

Unfortunetly its several teeth. My screw up.

Knife has been sent off back to Nick with 3 day service and insured. I'm sending him the tracking number. You guys will be impressed with the knife.

Thanks for letting my use it.

Hey, I've had teh knife for about a week now and will pack it up and send it on it's way tomorrow morning. I'll get a review up soon on this awesome knife.

Who do I need to contact for the next address on the list?

Joe

OK, got the knife today. I'm just going to post a few general impressions right now, then hopefully get a few things done with it by Monday or Tuesday (I work weekends).

First, I like the handle. I'm a big fan of how Nick does his micarta, and it seems to fit my hand great. In fact, this handle is just about perfect, as the length is just right. The handle on my forum knife from Nick is a little longer than I like, but works well for the length of the blade. This one is sized just right.

Second, I'm not a fan of the choil. Then again, I don't really care for choils in general. I won't get into the reasons for that, I'm sure you've all read the various pro and con threads about choils. I don't mind that the plunge line doesn't look as pretty on my forum knife, it's a user anyway, and a pretty nice-looking one in spite of that.

Third, the blade is a bit smaller than I'd like in this size range. Add to that the loss of usable edge because of the choil, and I'd really like to see just another 0.5" or 1.0" on this knife. It seems very handy, though, and I'm sure many will find it just right.

Finally, the sheath is typically awesome work by Nick, and overall the package is very appealing and functional. I'll be posting some further comments, and action pics, in the near future. And Joe, we're still waiting for that review ;)

Well, I apologize in advance to everyone who's been waiting for some recent pics of this baby in action. My wife is out of town, and took our only camera with her. And since I'm due to leave myself on vacation on Monday, there is no way I could wait for her to bring it back. So you all will just have to settle for a written description of the tests I put this knife through (although, it wasn't that extensive, and I'll tell you why in a minute).

First, I always test out a blade, especially a smaller one like this, in the kitchen environment. Over the last 3 days, I've been using it on a fairly regular basis for general slicing tasks. Even minced a few times! And the results are predictable: this is a fine slicing knife. The full flat grind and otherwise excellent geometry of this knife equate to excellent kitchen performance. The thumb grooves and comfortable handle really add up to excellent control. Now, I didn't clean a fish with it, but I have no doubt it would handle such tasks with aplomb.

Second, I tried my hand at simple whittling, the kind you might need to do for a variety of bushcraft tasks. I didn't make a bow drill or anything, but I could definitely spear a hog with one of my "creations". Again, the handle was very comfortable to use for prolonged periods, and the blade performed about as I expected. I have Nick's forum knife, and it does well on things like this. So it was no surprise that this little lady was also adept. It provided more a measure of control than the bigger blade (as you might expect), but I would not expect it to baton as well (which I did not try).

Third, my initial impressions of this knife were borne out during use. I like the handle (Nick makes the finest, most comfortable micarta handles I know of), but would have liked just a little more blade length. And during whittling, the choil became annoying. It's too small for an index finger, and just takes away from available edge length. A 3.5-4" version of this, without the choil, would have me seriously jonesing.

Well, hope y'all like the review, and again, sorry for the lack of pics. I'll be sending this knife along to whoever's next in the passaround. MRPink, I believe that is you. Please get back to me on your mailing address. I need to get this out tomorrow, or Monday at the latest, so I don't have to cart it cross-country on a plane. I'll fire off a PM or email to you right now. And thanks to everyone who made this passaround possible. I always enjoy handling custom pieces, especially one related to my all-time favorite knife.
Dave

Thanks Dave, I appreciate your feedback. I also like the fact that you explained your dislike of the choil. This is one of the reasons why I wanted to do a pass around. This way, everyone who had the chance to handle it, could then, tell me what they would like to see changed, or possibly order one, the way it is.
If you decide you want one with the mods you suggested, just let me know and I'll do my best to make it happen:)

Thanks again
Nick:)

Dave, email sent with me email. I can't wait to get it! :D

Mike, looks like I'll be meeting up with you soon to hand off the knife.

OK, the knife will be on it's way to MRpink today. Thanks again, Nick, for the opportunity to handle this fine piece of cutlery. And I wanted to say, even with the few nitpicks I had with the knife, I'd still be very happy to call it my own. It's miles ahead of any other knife I own, besides the forum knife, of course.

No time to play with it yet, but here's a quick picture.

The knife came with a mirror polished edge, SUPER sharp! Dave, what method did you use?

Like I said, just got it and didn't have a chance to really mess with it yet, but I love it so far. The contoured handles fit my medium sized hands perfectly. The knife is all business and not bad on the eyes either, it's beautiful. :D Full review to come.

Sounds good Mrpink. I look forward to your review:thumbup: The edge was polished by me before I shipped it to Jerkee Joe. He, or Dave may have done a bit more to it though. But I sharpen my knives with a Gatco system and finish with a ceramic stone, which polishes the edge.

Nick:)

The edges Nick puts on are seriously razor sharp. I try and keep them touched up with a ceramic stick, then I rarely have to do a more aggresive sharpening. Great stuff.

cool pics mrpink.... i can't wait to check this one out...:D it looks like a handy little knife...

Pictures up soon.

The more I use, the more I want it. It's going to be hard letting this one go.

Anyone have the link to the original thread where Nick posted up the specs on this one and as well as the first NWA forum knife? Oh, and are the handles tan canvas micarta or natural canvas micarta?
