NY Knife show

I'm so pissed, I was supposed to go this Saturday, the only day I can go. I was taking the train into the city with my friend to go to NYCKshow. We're waiting on the platform at Stony Brook train station. The train is coming up to the station. And some retarded old guy decides to try and cross the tracks to make the train and gets himself killed. So the we're wait around for a while and then find out the train isn't going to be operating for the rest of the day because of this. And at that point it's too late to head to another train station to catch a later train and be able to make it back from the city for a concert back on the east end of Long Island. Because it's a two hour train ride into the city from Suffolk county. By the way, the Vanilla Fudge concert I saw tonight did kick ass.

PJ wasnt the only one to get ripped off. The Strider guys had a prototype folder grabbed from their table.

Hey Guyz,

I had a good time over the past 3 days.

Nakano told me as I walked in Friday after noon Ernest Emerson called my name during his knife drawing...WOW!!!

It was good seeing old faces and seeing new ones. You guys here at Bladeforums who were there it was great meeting you and talking and sharing my knives with you.

I hope to have a table at the East Coast Knife Show in 2004. the dates for this is March 5,6 and 7 2004 @ Crowne Plaza Hotel.

I will write up my show report later tomorrow. Hope to hear from those here that went also.

I hope the theif is found and he gets what is coming to him!

Yes, someone stole one of the "numbered" prototypes from the Strider table, info will be publicized soon.
It is always great to see everybody, you can buy knives online or anywhere but the people are what make the NY show great.Always enjoy sitting with Phil sharing our Carsons, etc. as well as talking to everyone. Got to see Ebbtide,Esav,Boink,Cheif Wiggums,Martial Way,Yitz,Chuck,Leo,KVC,Win,Narruc1,and alot more, no slight intended if I didnt mention you by name, I'm old. Got to see about 25 of my fellow Suspects,a bunch of my fellow NJKCA members, as well as some makers and dealers I consider friends. Alot of people came up and introduced themselves to me, sorry if I dont remember all the names. For me the show is about the people, you can get most knives cheaper online on the forums, on ebay, etc., but you cant get the knife comaraderie anywhere else.Where else can you find members of NYPD and Local 81,Big Red Machine rubbing shoulders checking out knives?

I went home with 3 new Carsons-a small burgundy micarta model 4, a satin finish spearpoint CO2 Carson collaboration, and for variety an older black micarta handle medium model 4. I also got an Emerson Viper 1 and a waved Emerson CQC6. Life is good.

A special thank you to Larry Brahms and Ernest Emerson, they both went above and beyond to do something extremely nice for me and I thank you both, your kindness will never be forgotten.

Again, if there's anyone I spoke to and have forgotten, I apologize, no slight intended. I went to the show off 3 hours sleep after working all night, and had to go back to work after the show.

How do you like the CO2? If you don't mind me asking, what was the price?

Steven, you have to remember I'm biased towards Carsons:D
The CO2 is a tank, the framelock is solid as a rock, and it is just as smooth as my other Carsons.
I never mind sharing the price when it comes to Carsons because they are one of the best values around, it was $425.

I forgot to mention one thing. I have been going to the NYCKS for over 20 years. It was always a pleasure meeting and talking to Joe Mangiaracina and Paul Tausig the promoters. The new promoter Mr. D'Lack(I did not meet his partner Ed Wormser)is not a very nice guy and has absolutely no interest in making people feel good about being at the show. I was only there on Friday, from 10:30am-8pm so I cant say what happened the other days. There was an early line on Friday, mostly people with honorary Guild passes that allow you entry to the show 1 hour early. Except he decided he wasnt going to honor the passes, in his nasty, snobbish way of talking to people he just said he wasnt going to honor the passes. I wouldnt even mention it except he was really nasty about it. He has no idea who was on that line and I guarantee he wouldnt speak to people on the street the way he did that morning. At least 3 custom makers and 2 dealers mentioned to me their unhappiness about dealing with him and it was told to me that he was also the reason for the first time in years Chris Reeve wasnt there. This show has always been a nice blend of traditional, tactical and high end knives but unfortunately I think he will be steering it towards mostly high end knives. Sorry for the downer but this show is one of only two a year in NY and it means alot to us NY/NJ people.

I guess he thinks he's got a captive audience.

No such thing. There are businesses all over the history books that forgot who pays the bills.

Was that the dude with the "faggy" sunglasses? He looked like he belonged in Hollywood, not NYC!!

Wait in line buddy. The list from the Balisong Forum started from last year.... :D

I was stewing & fretting all day on Friday, wishing I was there. What made it worse was the fact that my brother drove up for the weekend for work & I could have theoretically ridden along. But it rained hammers & nails on me at work on Friday & I wouldn't have been able to get away anyhow. Missed seeing you guys & playing w/ the toys.
Whoever stole the Tomes folder is guaranteed a spot in Hell, and whoever stole the Strider will wish he was there when/if he is found.

Not a bad price at all. Can you explain (or link) how exactly the CO2 is made? Is still a fully custom knife? I know there are three people involved, but beyond that I'm in the dark.

According to what I know, Jody Carson(Kit's son) does the CNC work on the handles, Mike Obenauf(Kit's son-in-law) grinds the blades, and Kit does the assembly, tunes the lock and everything else. I had the pleasure of visiting Kit's shop a few months ago and can tell you they have their own CNC right in the shop.
I'll point Kit towards this thread and he can chime in, in case I got any of it wrong.

At first it appeared as if the 2 seperate show rooms gave the feeling that attendance was lower than previous. And it fact, it was. Perhaps it was the seperating of the rooms that may have confused or fustrated past attendees. Several exhibitors expressed dissatisfaction of this arrangement as well. Or the changing of location in past recent years. I hope that the promoters take this as a learning experience. And improve from it. I am all for Honorary Guild members to be permitted early entry. But from a promoters viewpoint, it is not a Guild sponsored event. So early entry is not a given. But again, I hope the promoters will improve/ reconsider in the future. And this includes the lighting of the showrooms! :(

But it was once again a fun experience. I' m glad many of the members of the various knife communities came by the Dozier table to say hello. Some new faces, some familiar. It is always fun to chat about the various aspects of knives. Even from armchair commandoes at times! :) And yes, there were 2 attendees who cut themselves this year! An annual ever changing vital statistic of this show.:D
