October MI Gathering

I don't know if anybody wants to demo stuff, but I thought about sharing how to tie a few knots/hitches. We use a few at work for life safety, that could get carried over to camping uses. Y'all might know them all already it was just a thought.

If y'all want to try it let me know and I'll pick up some rope at Harbor Freight that we can cut up and use to practice with.

Sounds good to me. Steve was going to show us some knots last November, but he cut himself.

Hey Jeff, thanks for pointing that out for us! Didn't even give it a thought! So I will be there around 8:00 a.m. your time then! Still planning to leave at 2:00 a.m.! I will be coming in a 2008 Nautical Blue 4Runner this time, so don't mistake me for a stranger! Ha! Ha!

See everyone on Saturday!

Tom

Unfortunately, it looks like I have to cancel for this weekend. My son has a practice in St. Louis for his ODP (Olympic Developmental Program) Waterpolo Team and my wife just doesn't feel that she can make the drive there and back by herself (she was in a car accident about a year ago and has trouble driving for more than 1/2 an hour at a time). I have passed along directions and contact info to Uncle Bill and encouraged him to attend, which I hope he does.

Sorry about cancelling at the last minute but a Dad's work is never done! I am sure you guys will have a great time and I will cry my eyes out when I see all the pics of the great time I am sure is in store for you!

:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You will be missed, but family comes first and there will be other Gatherings. See you soon!

Jeff

Thanks Jeff, I was really looking forward to some time in the Michigan woods! I hope your Last Ditch tool can handle the workout that I am sure it will receive.

Hi everybody!

I guess I am going to have to second Sean on dropping out of this "Gathering"! I have been trying to get some of my gear together today, and I guess I just don't have it in me right now! Can't seem to get my thoughts together real good, which could be the pain meds they still have me on! There are some times that I can go without them for a couple of days but, sooner than later I end up having to take them again! Then I keep thinking about getting all of this stuff upstairs out of the basement and then, loading it into the truck, cooking the beans on Friday, then having to get up at midnight to 1:00 in the morning so I can leave out of here, drive five hours, then unload everything for a day and a night, then loading it up again in the truck, driving back home for five hours, and having to unload everything again, then having to get it back into the basement and get it stored again for the winter! I'm really thinking that my back can't hold up to the strain anymore! As much as I would really love to come, I think I have to bow out this time around! I think I will just wait until the next one comes around at John's house, if that is alright with all of you? Making John's house is a lot easier for me, and just having to bringing food and beer is fairly easy but, I really don't think my body is going to allow me to do some of these kinds of things anymore!

kyturkey, if you could just bring that osage with you, and leave it down there with John, if he doesn't mind, I would really appreciate it! I will get down and see him eventually and probably before we have another "Gathering"! I'm going to have to take a sheath down to him anyway, for him to fix for me, and I will pick that osage up from him when I see him, if that is alright with you John? I really appreciate you thinking about me on this, and I'm sure I will enjoy the osage! Thanks!

Sean, maybe we, and anybody else that wants to come out, can get together some place in between your house and mine, some time before the weather turns real bad on us, have a few beers and just spend some time together! You can bring out the bucket of bottle caps and I'll take them off your hands and out of your way! Again thanks for thinking about me on that stuff! Keep in touch with me, and we'll try to work something out, and tell Uncle Bill he is always welcome too!

Andy, if you bring the stuff you picked up for me, if you wouldn't mind leaving that stuff at John's house for me, and again if John doesn't mind holding onto it for me, I'll pick it up from him some time in the near future! Thank you for thinking about me on that stuff! I really appreciate all of you guys looking out for me on the beer stuff!

John, if you don't mind! Can you hold onto these items for me until I can get down to visit with you again? I would really appreciate it! I will try to get with you and set up a good time to come down to see you! Maybe I can drive down to your place, drop off the sheath, pick up all the goodies that everyone is supposed to bring with them this weekend and leave with you! Then maybe we can take a ride out to get some sandwiches, and take them out to the park for a short picnic! I'll give you a call some time after you guys get back home, and have time to rest up! Then you can just ship the sheath to me along with the Early Style Hunter in January, if that works for you?

I'm really sorry to pull out on all of you guys at the last minute but, I just don't think I am up to it right now! I hope that doesn't cause any problems for anyone but, I just think my body has left me lacking after this last back surgery! Just a little bit of any kind of work now, makes me feel like someone took me out behind the woodshed and kicked my butt! I'm really getting tired of feeling like this but, I can't seem to get back to the place I was at before the surgery! I really hope that all you guys that make it over to Michigan have a great time, and I'll be waiting to see all the photos come up on the Thread! Just be careful on your trip and have a good time!

Please, everyone reply!

All of you guys take care, stay safe, and nobody cut yourselves!

Tom

Sorry to hear that, but I have no problem holding onto your stuff. I`m hoping to maybe have a Gathering at McKinley Woods again, the weekend before Thanksgiving, just like last year. I have not heard back from Andy as to when we are going Saturday. I emailed several times, maybe I`ll try to call today.
I also switched to Bobak`s smoked sausage instead of hotdogs for lunch Saturday, they are the best! Bought 3 packs.

OK... nobody else can bail, or I'm going to start taking this personally. Seriously, Tom I'm sorry that you can't make it. I'll catch up with you another time.

Since we are down to four we should probably make sure that we still have our supplies and equipment covered.

Jeff

I haven't heard back from Uncle Bill yet but he may still go. I will try and confirm with him today. Oh, trust me, if it wasn't for the polo thing I would be there with JK's on! I had actually packed most of my gear already and picked up supplies!

I`ll be there even if I have to ride my lawnmower!

OK, Teddy Bears are nice, but what we REALLY need is a little red wagon.

Jeff

Dollies and Teddy Bears, my footy pajamas would have fit in perfectly!

Oddly, once again, it looks like no one is bringing a knife. A knife is really handy to have in camp, I have one that you guys can borrow. :D

Hey Jeff! Believe me it was nothing personal! I was really wanting to go, and I was in the process of getting my gear together but, I was really having a hard time physically with trying to do that on my own! I really didn't want to ask Yvonne to help me, and I didn't want to get out there and have to ask everyone to do everything for me! I am just used to doing the things I need to do, and it is hard for me to ask other people to do it or to help me and I can't get used to that! Yvonne tries to keep me from doing anything I don't have to do but, she is killing herself slowly because, she is doing everything!

I think it is hard for people that have been used to doing things for themselves all their life while they are young, and having the strength and the muscle to do anything! Then out of nowhere, they have something happen to them, that totally knocks them off there feet, and that youth and vigor is taken away from them! Accidents and just plain old age in general are hard on people, their pride, and physically too! It really has been hard for me the last few years just age wise, a little at a time being yanked away from me physically, and then when the back went on me too, things just aren't right anymore! I think I was having a hard enough time with just getting old! If I felt better in my body, I would be there in a heart beat, you wouldn't have to ask twice, and I had all my JK's packed up already too!

Thanks John for gathering and holding any of the stuff that the guys bring for me! Like I said before, I will try to get on the phone with you one day next week and try to set up something for me to come down and visit! I can pick up and drop off what I need to, and we can try to get out some place if the weather is cooperative for us!

You guys won't have the Tootie Fruit now! One of you guys should at least bring a can of Pork n Beans! Ha! Ha!

You guys have a good time,

Tom
