Off Topic: 1911 gov't-size in .45 or full-size Glock in .45?

Easy choice for me, the 1911 gets my vote because I am a Glock hater. Every last Glock I have owned was a POS. Now compare the 1911 to an XD/XD(m) and I may have to think about it real hard. Also Kimber's no longer suck.

I don't have any big complaints against Glocks or 1911's. But when I put my hand around the Smith & Wesson M&P, I realized it was the best by far for my hand. I have other pistols, but none of them feels like the M&P. I have put many, many rounds of 45 ACP through it and never had a failure. Nothing fancy but it's been a great gun and it was very affordable too.

M&P's have been a bit love/hate for me over the years. I love S&W in general. And my Smith PC 1911 is my absolute favorite edc. But my full size S&W M&P VTAC comes with too many mixed feelings to ever find it getting the call to ride my hip. I like the grip, dual tritium/fiber carry sights are a nice touch. Overall fit-n-finish, long list of features, grip size compatibility, etc are all outstanding. But......I just can't get past the sponge they call a trigger. I really need to try out an aftermarket trigger, and maybe I'd feel different. But as-is on my full sized M&P's, the trigger is like pulling on a half broken water-logged twig, with a sponge wrapped around it. Ultimately the squishy twig will give way to fire.

Having said that, my little Shield 9 is an absolute pleasure to shoot. Not perfect, but I would call "more" Glock like. And because the Shield kicked Glocks butts in the single stack timing to market, I have not spent money on the "new" baby Glocks.

So for my edc priority lineup, it goes..... PC1911 in 45, Springer Micro Compact 1911 in 45, Shield 9, LCR 357, then maybe one of the G-bricks. Looks like I need to take a Smith family pic. Or at least my "other" carry options pics. Because I can't find any other than the 1911's.

1911 for me. I had a glock 21 Gen 4 and hated it. I couldn't yet anything with. I had been saving for some time when one of my local gun shops got a Les Baer hemi 572 in that they had ordered last year. I bought it, sold the glock and have never looked back. The Les Baer is so accurate it's crazy, plus now I feel like I have a gun that I can pass down to my son.

I am a Glock guy personally, but would choose HK VP9 or CZ 75 over either. I digress...
1911's sure are pretty though!

Glock 21. It's hard to beat the reliability, performance and price. No expensive particular mags to worry about. I can buy three Glocks for the price of a 1911 I'd actually trust to run hard if needed.

It's like comparing a Busse knife to other knives. Most other knives will cut but simply can not stand the abuse that a Busse can take.

A 1911 is a joy to shoot but simply will not tolerate the abuse a Glock can take and perform 100% of the time.

A Glock 20 and Glock 21 is a large pistol but you can slim the grip and frame down to make it more comfortable. There are gunsmiths out there than can re profile the Glock grip to make it closer resemble the 1911 grip angle. A Glock reworked by the right person with factory glock parts makes a world of difference in shooting comfort over a stock glock. A 4th gen Glock reworked is even better yet.

And you may ask why go to all that trouble with a Glock ? Because it is so tough and reliable and that is probably why the US Navy Seals went with the Glock 19.

We are fortunate to live in a time where there are so many quality firearms. I own both 1911's and Glocks (as well as many other manufacturers). Today's handguns are more reliable than we can ask for and are more accurate than most of us could ever hope to be. The firearms' ergonomics and weight are most important to me. While I've enjoyed all the 1911's I've owned and they are iconic for a reason, I personally prefer Glocks. They shoot well for me and have been utterly reliable while being easy to carry, should I chose.

I never got that feeling from mine. I actually like it and of course not everyone likes the same feel. I agree that the fit-n-finish, features, three grip size options, etc are all outstanding, plus the gun is made in the USA which I prefer. To me the Glock looks and feels like a brick, horrible. But I have shot them and they are reliable. But I won't ever own one, for me the M&P just kills it on so many levels, mainly the ergos in my hand. By the way, if you didn't know, a few days ago M&P just launched a new generation of triggers in their new M2.0 series.

Having said that, my little Shield 9 is an absolute pleasure to shoot.

Yep, M&P Shield is really nice, and they finally came out with a Shield in 45 this year also. Walther came out with a new 45 PPQ about a year ago that I would like to try, but I haven't held it yet.

I have Glocks in 10mm and 1911's in 10mm and 45

I love to shoot them all but prefer the 1911 (in 10mm) even though I carry the Glock more since I don't care if it gets banged around while I'm out in the woods

1911 hands down. I've been shooting them for 20+ years and shoot them better than any pistol out there. Glucks are good guns, but I would never own one. If it was given to me, I'd sell it and put the money towards another 1911. I hate the grips on all Glucks, and personally, it is my opinion that the hype associated with how reliable a Gluck is, is complete BS. I've seen them malfunction numerous times on the range, and in training. They are no better, or worse, than any other gun, just hyped up more.

I love them both, own them both and shoot them both well. But I have CC'd a Glock 17 for SD for the past 16 years.
For reliability, durability and practicality you cannot beat the Glock platform.

It would depend if a Glock in .45ACP fit your hand to your satisfaction. They are large and don't work for some. I own both a 1911 (series 70 Gold Cup - modified) and a 17/34. I like both but if pressed would take the Glock each and every time.

Andy knows of what he speaks, yet I would add that a 1911 does have an external "safety" your level of experience and training may make this irrelevant.

The full size glocks are rather large.

While I have both I prefer the 1911, I actually CC a Commander length in 45 with a Bob Tail Frame, one of my main gripes is the triggers on the Glocks (have tried upgrading parts and it helps but doesn't rise to the same level as a good 1911 trigger).

Of the choices, I'd pick the 1911. I haven't shot a 45 acp glock, but I've shot several other models and all had one thing in common, with the grip angle they just don't point naturally for me. It feels like a struggle to get the sights aligned when I point one and they feel unnatural to me once I do. I suppose this could be overcome with training, but why bother when there's HK, CZ, FN, Sig, S&W, Springfield, etc, etc that I don't have the same problem with. Nothing wrong with a Glock, they just aren't right for me.

I won't be here in 100 years to see if the Glock will retain its popularity and have an aftermarket of parts that will make your brain swell. However I feel very comfortable with all my 1911's with upgrades and custom work and if it fails under duress I'll use that steel frame as a club. My 1911's are for fun my S&W N frames are for reliability.

I've seen several posts about how Kimber's suck...what' the reasoning behind those statements? I own one and it has never given me one single issue...

Just for the heck of it, let's see where we all stand. When you respond, tell your choice (obviously) and why it's your pick. For me, it goes something like this:

1911. I shoot with them better than all of the Glocks I've tried, and I love the extra heft over the polymer Glock. It feels right AND looks right. Not to mention I'm sentimental to the design, because a Springfield 1911 has been my dad's favorite and most-used pistol ever since he bought it 10 or so years ago.

To your corners, folks :D

EDIT: I'm not looking for recommendations, this is just sort of a poll to see which way hogs lean in general.

I am issued a G21 in 45. I think that a 1911 is an awesome gun but for what I do the mag capacity is most important to me. The Glock is almost 2 times the capacity

I'd imagine it is a cost to reliability ratio some folks are referring to. For the cost of a Kimber you can get several glocks which will be more reliable.

Wear your Kimber or any other 1911 out in a swampy muddy environment or sandy for that matter and the difference will be more apparent.

Glocks have tolerances that handle SIGNIFICANTLY more foreign materiel than 1911 counterparts that cost many times more.

That said, I'll still pick up a 1911 at some point.

Another thing is lube, glocks run with or without any. Same can't be expected from other firearms, even other polymer pistols suffer without lube.
