Official 2012 Mini Knife KITH - closed!!

DSCN7147.jpgDSCN7146.jpgToday I corrected some flaws in the blade that forced me to start the hand sanding from scratch... but the result is no dark spots on the blade. I then did my makers mark etches.

Selected and cored the piece of mammoth scrap. It's an amazingly good fit.

I thought about entering this, so I tried out my first mini last night. I have been making kitchen knives lately, so here is my 1/4 scale of an 8" Chef

Unfortunately my wife fell in love with it's "cuteness" and refuses to give it up. It only took me 3 hours to make so I might make another one for the KITH. This is not an entry, just showing my first one to see if I could do it.

I really like that Jason! Makes me want to slice up some Mini Carrots!

Here's mine so far, 1:10 scale hunter, 400 layer damascus

Evil bastard, don't tease us like that! I love the bolsters and slightly larger scale. How thick is the blade?

Jason, that is awesome! Gotta make another one, less cute this time! Oh and make sure it doesn't match that one or you'll be making earrings next! Ask me how I know...

Charles, looking good so far! I like 1:10 scale the best I think, maybe 1/5 because it allows a little more detail, but a tiny one like that sure is cool! Just be careful polishing the blade, I already skewered my thumb by not paying attention when sanding.

Keep it up guys!

I'm trying to get the scale better this year. Last year the blade was a bit thick. This one is .028" and tapers to .010". Sharpening it is going to be a pain!

The last 1/10 bowie I did was .025" and distally tapered and I put some 800# on the disc grinder and put an edge bevel on. Use a very light touch, it goes quick! Although at that scale it doesn't matter if it can push cut TP or not! Also if you have a ceramic honing "steel" that works well. I think mine is about an #8000 by now. I would be afraid to put it up to anything more aggressive than those two options!

Greg, that thing is cool looking! Seeing some quality stuff this year! Really a big step up in materials I'm noticing, too.

I think I settled on the guard style for my recurve facón inspired mini. I may also do a puñal style criollo for fun, since those knives really interest me.

How thick is the blade?

If I recall it is .065 15n20. I know the width isn't exactly to scale because I use 3/32 on my kitchen blades but this is the thinnest blade steel I had on hand and didn't feel like thinning it down.

Well I managed to get some work done on my mini yesterday. I re annealed it and sanded away all the poor hamon activity I attempted on the 1st hardening. Got the tang sized up to match my punch for the guard, and basically am ready to heat treat again. I don't know if I should attempt another hamon due to the first failure which I believe was from too much time between heat and quench. These things cool so fast they can air quench in still air!

Anyways, here are some shots showing the mini...

Currently the knife measures .029" at the ricasso and is distally tapered..

Hopefully I can get it HT on Thursday since I have it off and in the mean time I'm working on getting the guard tools and compnents together. We all love photos, so show us where you're at with your mini!

Today I discovered that I lost the ivory handle for my mini. No giant loss, since I have so much scrap ivory... but is still annoys the hell out of me.

Looking good Greg! I haven't even stepped foot in my shop, been busy, I need to get it going.
