Official 2012 Mini Knife KITH - closed!!

Yesterday and today I spent time finish sanding the handle and pommel to 2000 grit. I'm pleasantly surprised by the amount of deep luster and shine I was able to attain on the mammoth ivory scrap piece. It took a few iterations to find and remove the scratches, but the end result was worth it. I just finished final assembly and took a few snapshots of it in the clamp. Because the photos used flash, the luster on the handle doesn't show, but here's one of the photos just for documentation's sake.

I've selected the presentation box this will be sent in. I think the recipient will probably be tempted to make scales out of it. :) My advice... don't do it.

Needless to say, I'll be ready in time.

Very nicely done! At least going over the handle on that nife only takes a few minutes compared to a full sized knife! The leather handle I did last year I went over it maybe 20 times reshaping and refinishing to get it to match my spcified dimensions!

I really, really want to and I am hoping to pull it off. :D Thanks!

I started working on modifying the presentation box today... not finished yet, but this is what I'm working on. The box is made from some kind of unstabilized burl and the liner is padded deer suede.

That looks fantastic Greg! I was thinking of just using an old Skoal can with some TP in it!:p

Thanks. I still have some cleanup to do on the box, but I guess you can say I'm done (ahead of schedule).

Started fitting the guard today. Using .999 silver. I found out real quick how good of a conductor silver is from just a couple 2 second passes on worn out 320 paper on the 9" disc! This stuff gets hot quick and stays hot! My hands are hurting now so I'm done for the day. I got 95% of finish sanding done on the blade up 2000# and will bring it back down to a clean 1000# when finished.

Fitting the tang hole...

Got the top of the guard bent forward and better fit to the ricasso. Also started to trim down closer to final size...

Well its time to clean up and go make dinner, chorizo con huevos y napoles. Some home made chips and salsa as well.

Here is mine. I hope someone here likes it enough to be happy to get it in the KITH. I tried to blend the line for the handle mortise as best as I could. I'm probably going to soak the wraps in epoxy a couple of more times to make sure the bond is extra good too.

I'm trying to think of something clever to serve as a base for it, something to sit on a desk and hold it. A skull or a rock or something.

I can send you a piece of ivory if you want to carve a split skull to bury the axe into. :)
