Yesterday and today I spent time finish sanding the handle and pommel to 2000 grit. I'm pleasantly surprised by the amount of deep luster and shine I was able to attain on the mammoth ivory scrap piece. It took a few iterations to find and remove the scratches, but the end result was worth it. I just finished final assembly and took a few snapshots of it in the clamp. Because the photos used flash, the luster on the handle doesn't show, but here's one of the photos just for documentation's sake.
I've selected the presentation box this will be sent in. I think the recipient will probably be tempted to make scales out of it.
My advice... don't do it.
Needless to say, I'll be ready in time.
