Official 2013 Mini Knife KITH!

It should be heat treated. Many of us go by eye and that comes from experiance. If you have some different styles of full sized knives you can get some basic measurments like average handle thickness, blade thickness, guard, etc.

My first one I did a scale replica, which was fun but tedious. After that I just get a general idea of what I want to do and how I would build a full sized knife, and scale from there.

Also, please send me your info as specified in the opening post.

Charles, I have some fixtures I want to build for my minis and then I will start on mine. I also need to finish up a couple of orders this week to clear my schedule.

Well guys, it's been a week and I haven't seen anything new up here. Anyone got anything going on? I am a little behind on other stuff due to a mini vacation with the wife, but am planning out my mini while working on my orders. I think I am going to go for another bowie this year, but thats not set in stone. I have a technique I want to try out, but I don't want to give away too much detail yet.

More nice handle materials, I have some MOP, some abalone, and various ivories. Who knows what else I could find to use. Sometimes the plain and basic materials take on a whole new character in small scale.

I changed handle materials, since I found a beautiful piece of extremely tightly grained Brazilian Tigerwood in an endcut. I tried to make a 3 piece laminated steel (1070 and O1) for the second blade and failed miserable. I tried with my OA setup, as I didn't have all the parts for my forge yet. I will try again once I get the forge put together and the PID calibrated.

I must be losing my touch. Nothing I make is coming out as well as my extra from last year. I may enter it in the KITH if I can't make something better. Graham is making a few changes to one of his pirate swords and it should be ready to enter soon. We're having a small, private hammer-in this weekend and hopefully we'll get something better made.

Sometimes its good to put a project down for a while and come back to it wit fresh eyes. I started forging something out last week, but things weren't looking how I wanted. I do need to start something again, though. I will get something going thi week.

Anyone else got something on the bench?

Well guys, not much activity in here...you getting something done??

I'm working on an inegral subhilt fighter. Don't have an exact scale yet, I haven't even measured it. Still finalizing the shape and I have left things a little fat so I have material to remove after HT. Tapered tang, too. It is 1084, I just kinda winged it for size, no real plan.

Hope someone is getting a mini going! Just about 6 weeks left.

Man that thing is kick ass xander! I have been busy with other projects lately, new forge, recently finished belt grinder, a knife that I have prob spent 10 hours on trying to find the right etching technique to bring out the hamon in a way I like, and I just resanded it "blank" again lol. It's sad that this KITH hasn't taken off like the previous years, there were a bunch of people in and great results.

I still want ta do this, and I was thinkin for a while about doin a mini kukri cause, well I didn't see one in the previous years, and also I have one of those 6-7" OAL mini display ones from himalyan imports thats all messed up, so I could use the materials off that to make it ( horn, sheath wrap, brass etc.) I am not so sure though, as that's the only thing I've thought of so far. My motivation as well as creativity have been on a looong dry spell :( So I guess we'll see. But yea man, can't wait to see how that sub hilt turns out! :)

We haven't dropped out. Just a lot going on with baseball, dead grinder, etc. We both still plan to have one finished for the KITH.

Thanx for the kind words guys! Sorry I have been a bit absent in here, an unexpected death of a close friend kind threw a wrench in the gears so to speak. I have been looking at the mini the last two days and decided I need some metal grinding therapy soon! I will get going on it and hopefully have it ready for a handle and finishing by mid week.

I do have others that are done if this thing goes south, so no issues there.

Charles, can't wait to see what you and Graham come up with! I know you two push yourselves pretty good on this every year!

C'mon guys, let's see some minis!

-Xander

Wow guys! Impressive!

Xander the subhilt is just nuts! Very impressive...

Hey guys , Looks like Im going to have to drop out of this...Baby came a few weeks early and from the feel of things I wont be getting out to the shop much

I’m in, I will make a knife by July 7
Hopefully it's not too late for me to join but I have an extra little 1/4" chunk of 1095 that would look really nice as an axe...
I want to make a 1:4 scale Barco Michigan pattern double bit cruiser.
I'll start on it tomorrow and post some pics!

The only time its too late to enter is by July 8th! Anyone may enter all the way up to the deadline. I got your info, I will add it to the list shortly. Can't wait to see what you come up with!

-Xander

Might not be able to make that axe. Seems I can't drill a straight hole through an inch of .2" steel haha.
Might have to make a kukri instead!

It happens! Many people find out just how difficult making a mini really is when entering this KITH!

I'm grinding in the bevels on the sub-hilt this morning, and getting it ready to HT. Hopefully I can get I HT'd before work today.

I still need to decide on handle material and pin configuration for drilling holes and finding the right wire. I always make mine using proper methods, no fake pins for show on mine!

-Xander

That's looking awesome. I hope to have a forge one day so I can do integral bolsters and other cool things.

Here is the axe head with the holes coming out the side of it.

And so I started working on this one.

I'm basing it off of an 18" Ang Khola I have and is 1:5 scale. I'm not sure how i'm going to get the fullers on this thing though...
