Official PSK Challenege - With Giveaway!!

I'm just curious as to the rules - is this 'use whatever you'd normally bring on a dayhike' or is this 'you were walking down a city street, and are now gonna have to survive with what was on you' ?

It is whatever you define as your PSK. I made it "no rules" on purpose. This is supposed to be a kit that is very small and very minimalist. I didn't want to make a rule that it HAD to be what's on your person as I bet we'd get less than a few people interested, but at the same time I can tell you a backpack kit is probably not going to win this competition...

Altoids, pelican case, fanny pack, etc are the type of things I was originally looking for. My kit is a zip up bag that measures 8x4x3.

All too quickly we are splitting hairs which is what I didn't want to do. This thread is about SKILLS AND MINDSET, not GEAR. You need the gear to accomplish some tasks, but the idea was to get out in the woods and try it, not worry about what you do or don't have with you.

In summary- Get out, go minimal, enjoy yourself, take pics, learn something, and have the chance to win something cool.

If I made a thread asking about what is IN your altoids kit I bet I'd have 5 pages within a day or two. Now when something comes along asking people to USE that kit very few step up and even more split hairs about what can/can't be used and what the rules are. People love to take pics and flap their gums, few are willing to put it to the test. The giveaway is to entice people to go, not to make this a bureaucratic event. To the guys who were on board from the get go - you were the ones I was looking for. Kudos!

I might think about doing this. Just got a Pygmy Falcon II, and have a few bits of survival-oriented gear in it. I don't know if this would really count, but I probably have less in that pack than most carry in their PSK. Will be out hunting this weekend, if I'm feeling crazy I'll spend a night out and see how that works. I'm probably being way too ambitious, but we'll see. If you never hear from me again, either the cold or bigfoot got me.

ok here we go.

BOOMSTICK- You took the time to clutter this thread with a ton of pics from your BACKPACKING TRIPS from the past, are you going to take part in this challenge the way it is laid out in my original post?

We all have pics from our travels, that was not the idea here.

Sounds like a plan. Do it!

You need to calm down. Not everyone has the luxury of being to hit the trails whenever they'd like. Not everyone is able to risk illness that could easily occur during a winter night unprotected. And not everyone, like myself, even keeps a PSK, hence my question.

Not trying to stir the pot, but just wanted to say that I thought the rules/expectations were stated clearly. Spend the night in the woods w/ you PSK or what you would normally take on a quick hike. Then use that minimalistic gear to survive the night. Test it, depend on it, and hate yourself in the morning for not having enough matches, or no first aid items, or no aluminum foil.

LMAO....I had to laugh at the underlined parts :D

Knowing me with all of these cold fronts blowing in I'll be sitting there with my firesteel for an hour or so as my hands slowly go numb :p

Im still up for, it has been getting progressivly colder but it should be ok. (minus 27 with windchill last night)

bowing out on this one! I need to work before I can play.

So I thought the idea was to use your psk. I have had to use my psk more than once. yes I have had to use the stuff in my psk often, waxed thread, sak, moleskin, cup and stove.....If you mean am I going to spend the entire day taking pictures of myself using a psk close to home... not likely.. I guess you want pictures of someone in a local park burning cotton balls than. at least I get out and use my psk.... nuff said. I'm out then.. (no worries I'm not all mad)

That wasn't directed at you and it wasn't intended to be confrontational in the least. Just trying to strike up some motivation is all. I apologize for quoting you and making it seem like it was directed at you, that wasn't what I was trying to do.

Take care.

Can't wait!!

Remember guys, please take enough stuff to stay warm. I know that is a little "un-PSK" but as long as you are using tools and gear from it, you're good to go. I don't want anybody endangering themselves out there.

My PSK holds 2 space blankets which will be my shelter, but I will also be bringing a military wool blanket and possible a fleece one wrapped up inside it.

Sorry if I misinterpreted the spirit of the post! Mine was actually concern for other fellas here that I know aren't 'posers'.

I've got my kit pretty much ready to roll and have set a limit of next weekend to get out and get something done. It all fits in a small bag from REI about 8x4x2.

I'm going to dress warm and bring a military wool blanket with me. A buddy is coming along but he will probably have more traditional backpacking gear. I promise not to use any of his stuff. :)
