Very nice! What are we looking at? I'm not a Survive Knife expert so I'm not sure.

That is a GREAT picture and THANK YOU for posting it so posterity can refer back to the shape and size of each

I couldn't help but notice that the new 5 has mis-aligned screw-heads :D Your fault or is Guy slipping ;)

Oh and on an unrelated topic from a few posts back, if you're allergic to DEET or wear artificial fabrics, an excellent alternative repellant is Picaridin: http://www.picaridin.info/#
The WHO recommends it as the only effective alternative to DEET, and it is less toxic. I use it on myself (a sugar-fiend) and children in the woods around around property during peak season and have been impressed. It is available in certain repellants from major labels, just check the ingredients. For example, 15% Picaridin:

^^^^^This guy owns the advantage!

I know there's some cool dudes out there who have had a 6 and 5 at different times, but you're the only one I can think of now that currently has both. Do you intend on using the 5 and 6 in drastically different ways?

LOL! No. Different strokes for different folks I guess.

I like them both and think the 5, 5.1, and 6 all sort of fill the same role. It sort of depends if you want that extra 1" of blade, 1" of choil, or the lightest, most compact cutter of the three that's just as robust and capable as the bigger blades.

I haven't had the 5 long enough to know if it's going to be the best of the three but I'm sure liking it so far.

I'd love to hear your thoughts between the 5 and 6 as I am thinking about one or the other as a one-tool option from hunting to camp kitchen and all things survival. Would you feel either could replace your 4.1 or would you feel the need to consider them both (4.1 and either the 5 or 6) for different tasks?

Great answer, thanks!

I'll be looking forward to his response. I'm trying to weigh having a 6 in addition to a 5 :D

I think the 4.1 and 5 are the Jacks of All Trades in the S! lineup and could be used interchangeably (at least that's the way I view them.) Some folks will like the 4.1 better; some the 5.

The 6 starts edging into the "too much" zone just as the 3.5 does into the "too little" zone. Does that make sense?

In my mind, you could absolutely do it all with some planning and either the 4.1 or the 5 in a bushcraft or survival scenario. Does that mean in some situations I wouldn't want the extra blade length of the 6? Heck no! :)

I like the 4.1 for carrying around the property when I have no plans for any chopping, not to say that you could not baton your way through wood if required. I prefer the 4.1 to the 5.1 for fine work and fine bushcrafting duties. I prefer something larger (up to 10) if I want to efficiently work around a campsite. I pair the 4.1 with the 10 when camping, and the 4.1 is on my belt more than any Survive! knife I own. But when I need more than the 4.1 when light chopping is likely, the 5.1 (5 or 6, don't own either yet) is my go to carry option.

That's pretty much exactly the answer I was hoping for. Thanks!

Just to muddy the waters, my take is a little different. I've not held the 6, but I've had the 4.1, 5 and 5.1, and I'm assuming the size and weight of the 6 is almost identical to the 5.1. To my mind, the 5 is a significantly larger / heavier knife than the 4.1, but there is relatively little difference in size between the 5.1 and 5. In terms of blade-length, 4-5" is best for an all-around knife, but the 5 felt to me like it was a waste of additional weight because it didn't have the length to make good use of that weight on the swing. That's why I replace by 5 with the 5.1 - to get the best of both worlds.

I think I just said this in another thread, but very educational discussion here

Lookin' good, Cham!

Hey Huntsmuleys... Would you consider the GSO 5 too big for whitetail/muleys or is that your main hunting knife?

I think it's a little big for deer. The 5 is actually a little bigger than what I usually use for elk. This was the first time I used the 5 to quarter an animal. It worked great for me. It still shaves hair after a whole elk! That 3V is amazing!
