Old Friends Friday

Thank you Brian, that's a nice old Richards you have there. I have a few, but they're not the ones I had as a boy I'm afraid

Time to bring this thread back. This is a Kissing Crane with buffalo horn scales that I picked up in the early 90's. It saw a lot of pocket time back then.

Thanks for bringing this thread back up Lambertiana, and with a nice Old Friend :)

My old friend today is this IXL Stockman, very kindly gifted to me, a couple of years back, by Lyle. Since I gifted another of these knives to Stephen 'Old & In The Way', who I very much hope will find his way back to The Porch one day, I'm minded of more than one old friend :) Thanks again Lyle, great old Sheffield Stockman

Here's an old Turner Naylor &Co, Sheffield, In horn, a nice small carry at 3 1/16th. Seems to have been re pinned at some point. There's bad light on the tip of the blade.

Happy Friday Folksy folks.

Best regards

Robin

Very interesting to see that Robin. At a glance, I would have taken it fora William Rodgers, both ADEE and I have Rodgers knives, which are very similar (though mine have seen more of the stone)

This was my grandfathers 1940-1948 Case trapper. He passed away in 1973 and I still miss him. So this "Old Friend" is in my pocket today. :)

Thanks Gev,thanks Jack.
Jack, what does tweedsdale have to say about this mark? Bernard says 1930s but the knife has only the sheffield mark. I guess it could have been for British sale but you'd think by the 30s they would be using the England mark for all their knives.

Tweedale says 1871, being located at Northern Tool Works, John Street. They became a limited company in 1897, and in 1909, the firm was acquired by William Marples & Sons, but continued trading until 1963

Thanks Jack. Bernard is pretty vague on the company, called them tool makers:eek: I have to get a Tweedsdale, thanks for the lookup my friend.

When it comes to the old Sheffield firms, I think Prof. Tweedale is by far the best authority. The new 2nd Edition of his book is P.O.D. and while not inexpensive, is a very sound investment I believe. It is clearly a labour of love since the cover price would barely pay for the paper!

Outstanding, Mark! Knives with family histories are the best. Inheriting two of my grandfather's knives was what reintroduced me to traditionals.
