"Old Knives"

Sorry to quote all the pictures (I normally get annoyed when people do that), but I can't help it this time.
This is probably the coolest old pocket knife I've seen in years. So unique, from one of my favorite old classic makers, and the typo'd stamp is to die for!
(If you ever, ever, ever want to part with this one, please let me know, so I can sell my car. ;) )
Thanks puukkoman and Will. This pattern has become my obsession, and although I have a few exquisite examples, she is the most intriguing.

As Will stated ,it looks like she's saw lots of action, but the pruner looks full. The pruner blade is much larger than other Ulster examples I have.I have been told,by those more knowledgeable, that some were produced as such.I thought maybe that blade had been added later, according to pocket wear on handles. This knife has weak 1/2 stops on the large pruner also, which is not evidenced in any of the other 20 some I have(I don't think any have 1/2 stops on the pruner). The "nesting" of blades leave hardly any room for error.

The frames seem the same. The difference is mainly the size of the pruner blade, along with it's travel, kicks, and the stamping size. The worn one has a much smaller font size.It is harder to compare without the knives in hand. The font size is consistent on both the pruner and spey(both smaller fonts),which leads me to believe(along with the more knowledgeable assertions) that she is original.

A forum member asked for more pictures of my Holley Wharncliff, and I figured that as long as I was taking more pictures and emailing them to him, I might as well put them here.

I found it in the 1884 HSB catalog

Thanks Lambertiana.I'd like to buy a couple dozen of those.

A little over $1.00 each.Supposedly only $25.16 in 2012 with inflation adjustment.Doesn't seem inflated enough.

Here's a decent Valley Forge MOP I picked up today...for $10

When I look at these old catalogs I think the same thing - I'd love to get a dozen of each pattern.

Two things to consider: First, those are wholesale prices. Second, at that time, typical working wages were about a dollar a day. So figure what a typical worker earns in a day today for the true equivalent price (at wholesale). They were more expensive than it seems from the inflation adjuster programs.

Perhaps that is why direct sellers such as Maher & Grosh were so successful. See the retail prices in this ad from about 1887

Looks like the way things are goin', it's gonna be like a 3 1/2" - 4" Congress Jack with white Micarta scales and a sheepsfoot and maybe a small clip or pen in 1095, Should make for some nice contrast as it address and starts developin' a patina.

Now gotta find out picture cobbler and have him Frankenstein us a possible pic. ;)
