"Old Knives"

One of the nicest scout knives I've ever seen. From blade selection to gorgeous bone, it has it all.

Hal, like everyone else who has laid eyes on that beauty, I just have to say how refreshing it is to see a western Boulder in that stunning condition, just a simply beautiful knife.
Thank you for sharing with us kind Sir.

Western Boulder 6490 - Circa 1950's Utility knife. A little blade rub here and there, nice to find a nice Western Boulder knife. A 6490 pattern is tough to find with the shield. They made these for the military, and the pattern dates back to the early 20's when Western States made an official Boy Scout utility knife.
Quite nice indeed Hal. That one appears to be in pretty good shape for as old and collectible as it is. :)

Sometime ago I noticed a nice looking Hammer Brand jack on ebay. Normally I would have pass this knife since there was no description regarding the blades condition, but the stag was so nice and so I put low bid and won to my surprise.
When I got it, the blades had significant play and were hardly snapping. So I washed the knife and put it for 3 days in oil, looking at unbelievable amount of dirt dropping out this knife. Then I took care of the blades play with careful hammer strikes. Now the blades are firm and have loud snap like it should.
One more issue is that the previous owner had tried to sharpened the knife with files or heavy tools causing scratches all over the blades and yet leaving them dull  I had to work few hours with water stones to make it sharp and some more time to deal with the scratches without hurting the patina. I think it was worth all the hard (and enjoyable) work i put into it.

I really liked that single spring. Funny, the day I mailed this one off, I found that other one...must be Karma or something. :D

I haven't posted anything here in awhile. Here's a NYKCo. "Hammer Brand" Dogleg Jack. 3-5/8 closed. Matchstrike pull and
some amazing old bone...imho.
