"Old Knives"

Couldn't read the tang, Campbell. Looks mint. Is it an "Ulster Knife Co" , and does it have U.S.A. on it??

Well, it's a later Ulster, but from when they were still using bone, so it's quite desirable. I'd say the value spans a wide range, depending on who's buying. $75-150 is my estimate.
Did your book arrive??

It did. And thank you very much. I was missing my old copy and it's great to have one in hand again.

It was such a clean knife with no wear at all, except for a little pitting on the main blade. I jumped at the chance when the guy said he'd take $25 for it. I have trouble valuing the Ulster USA knives...weren't they only around for a couple of years?

Pitting will devalue it some, but you still got a great deal at $25.
Albert Baer changed the marking to the USA stamp in about 1941 when he bought Ulster, and it was used until 1972-1973. I think they used that bone until the 50s-60s, but I am not sure of that.

Thanks for the comments on the barlows. I think the Southington is one of the oldest knives I've owned. You're right Charlie, those bolster stamps on barlows are cool.

Mike those barlows are very nice. Sawcut bone ages wonderfully. I like the paint on the NYK blade too.

Good eye on the yellow paint, Navihawk. I also added a scratch to the bolster and handle on one side when I was opening the package with a very sharp knife that was made by Kerry Hampton.

I won't stand near you when you take a knife out, Mike!:p No offense; I'm all scratched up as it is.:D
Here's a nice older Case 6318, with ten dots, $87 on the 'Bay. Been used a little, but I can see why, once again, people love their older Case knives. Nice thin, snappy blades. A few swipes on the magic hone I got from an old Dog, and hocus pocus, sharp as a razor. My bookkeeper had to restrain me, or I'd be slicing up all the paper in the office!!
But then, there's the smooth lines, and WAY purty handles, and the fit in my watch pocket, where it just pops out into my hand. Sometimes, I pop it out, and into my FR when no-one's lookin' (don't wanna get arrested:eek:!), and fondle it!
MMM! MMM! good!:)

Charlie, that's a beauty and the sheepfoot is even done right on that "18".

Yeah, the sheepfoot sits pretty good. I could lower it a tad, but the backsprings are nice and flush, too good to mess with!

Thats one of the things I like about that sheepsfoot is how far it sticks out.Charlie, are the liners nickel silver on that? I noticed the pins were.

I have some of my grandfather's pocket knives, some are in terrible condition, the one in this link is in pretty good shape. Can anybody tell me anything about the age?

I will be posting more of my grandfather's knives and straight razors soon. He had been a barber and I have been lucky enough to have been given his case that was full of his barber tools.

Kevin, I'd email but I see you don't have a link there. You'd be better off posting relevant images individually here in the thread (or specific image links at the very least) rather than sending a link to an image website containing much content not relevant to the thread.

A little more work for you but a bit better for maintaining the continuity of this thread.

Also, you can get a lot of info on dating knives etc. in Bernard Levine's forum here on the site.

Thanks.

I really ought to upgrade and get the ability to post pics. Been meaning to do that for a while now. Thanks for the feedback.

Kevin, I think you should be able to post an image from your site (not sure about this) if you put the link in this format:

Give it a try and see if it works for you. Just put
after it. Worth a shot. (You can email me off the thread if you have any questions so that we don't bog down the discussion here.)
