"Old Knives"

When quoting, maybe instead of including all the pics in the quote, it would be possible to put only enough to get the idea. As with my predecessor, there has been a request. The quote below is from the Traditional Forum Posting Guidelines. (Don't take this to mean you should not post all the pics in the original post. Please do post all of them in the original. Just maybe folks who quote, might quote more judiciously.)

Copying & Pasting

I've been asked by some of our members recently to request the following:

Please edit your posts and replies so that you don't have to unnecessarily copy images and quotes over and over in a thread ad infinitum. You can excise the images and portion of a previous post that are not relevant in making your point which will enhance the reading experience for your fellow forumites. Thanks for taking the time and care to do so.

Jd, nice Camillus, wonderful shape for its age. Hard to find with full blade like that.

Rob, great pics of great vintage knives, thanks.

Robin - thats a simply gorgeous knife my friend - just Wow!!

Now a while ago, cant remember - was it Adee? posted an all ivory knife..this isnt Ivory - but great attention to detail nail nicks, Swedge, Sunken Joint..

Duncan : Do you suppose that that knife is a scale model of some maker's knife to be made in more substantial materials????

Harry

I'm not too sure Harry - but you do see these around - take for instance the last one shown ( Adee's ) - but that particular one was in Ivory- and I doubt wether they would use Ivory as a template- but good thought because just what use are these knives in a practical sense? Even for fruit they would be pretty weak.

Traditionally, I think they were referred to as, "whimsies" and were crafted by sailors on whaling craft along with needle cases, bobbins, other sewing and knitting notions and other odds & ends.

I suspect the knives were used as letter openers.

Received this Lawton Cutlery Co. coke bottle jack. very little out there on these, dates 1890-95, Lawton was a importer and jobber of cutlery in Chicago.
Not sure if this one started with a punch secondary or it has been reprofiled that way.
Good tight knife with excellent snap, has pitting from rust and unfortunately did not escape the ravages of the evil buffer, not to bad.

Thanks Jack - all to true my friend!

Aug - thats a neat old one! Love the Old Bone, at a guess the reason for the Bolsters to be shiny and the blades not-perhaps a tightening of the pin which would require the Bolster to be sanded because of work to the pin? - but a way-cool knife my friend!!

Augie, that coke bottle is great!

Here's a little dandy I picked up. Shame the one blade was snapped, but everything else is there. Just a well made little knife...

Look what i have on the way......The main blade says HSB,but smaller blade has KENT
stamped on it....Im just starting to collect the old knives and I have no clue as to whether
the blade has been changed out,or original?

Whattya friends think?
