"Old Knives"

A recent trio of late. Two Hibbard Spencer Bartlett & Co, OVB, one large bone Stockman and an ebony Jack and then a Schrade Cut Co peachseed bone Jack:thumbsup: All three have nice full blades and great walk n talk.

The OVB large Stockman may be one of the nicest vintage knives I've picked up. Coined liner, threaded bolsters, full blades and quite possibly the nicest bone (sans peachseed) I have owned, then throw in the Spiral punch and I am flat out giddy:p All blades are tight with no play period:thumbsup: The OVB on the clip is stamped vs etched, another nice touch.

Wow that HSB stockman is a gem, it got me giddy too!! Congrats on such a beautiful score!

Paul my friend. Haven’t looked into things too deep yet - but I am betting with that Punch ( is it a two piece - as in laminated tang on the Punch - or just one single piece ) most probably a single piece ....that that’s a Camillus made Knife - with that Bone as well a and with Camillus’s “Spiral Punch”.

Man what beautiful knives Paul my friend.

That Bone on Early Schrades is simply the definition of Beautiful!!! So is Camillus's Bone- at times its absolutely striking!!!

WOW! Three beautiful knives, paulhilborn paulhilborn ! An Ebony jack, always a win. Any Schrade cut co bone, another win. But that HSB- OVB!! My gosh, that thing is magnificent. You must be elated! Congrats on that powerful trio.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Rob, Nick, Duncan and Mark, thank you:thumbsup:

Duncan, one piece in regards to the punch. I know several knife co's made knives for HSB, some by NYKC, Robeson and others. My knowledge is limited in regards to their history so I didn't know Camillus made knives for them as well but certainly makes sense. Care to guess an approx age of the knife?

Mate I don’t know Jack ( a saying in New Zealand which means I don’t know anything ) lol. That punch though is definitely Camillus- and that Bone if you compare to some of Charlie’s amazing examples - Whew.
NY Punch? those Punches are two sided at right angles - they are Deeply Spiraled - also NY make that same punch without the Spirals as well.

remember that Scout I was showing Bill at the GEC Rendezvous? Trying to persuade him to do a Punch like that - because that was deeply Spiraled - two sided as in right angled. haha ... well that one!

I going to widley Guess at age and stand to be corrected by those who know their stuff, so here goes.... late 40’s to 50’s.

Beautiful and interesting my friend.

Now who made that beautiful Ebony .....lol.

Clauss jack... anybody have any insight on the bone on this one? I call it "pocket polished" but not sure how it got shiny. It's a big jack at 3-3/4" and quite heavy duty... my first Clauss and I approve :)

I'd guess that bone got shiny from years of riding in a gritty pocket, with liberal application of motor oil. Fantastic!

There are hardly any superlatives that I may add for those 3 Paul , and every one of them are certainly deserved . All 3 knives are great but the HSB Stockman , IMO , is just outstanding . Congrats on some great finds my friend .

Harry

Man these old Knives.... Just stunning!
Ok Paul, I pulled a few boxes out and looked at a Couple of OVB Harness Jacks, then went into my Cattle Knives because I knew I had some Spiraled punches there.....
Also I would lie you to compare the Bone on my old Camillus Trapper to yours and put the two together so to speak.....

Spiral Punch on this well made Cattle Knife, Blade is etched "Sta Sharp" also Tang is Stamped " High Carbon Steel, USA.
Sears Knife made by Camillus- this too has a Centre Liner Coined.......

Here also is another Camillus made Knife, Has the High Carbon Steel Stamp- with Craftsman Sta Sharp etched on the Main..this is a Beast, Three Springed and incredibly made - here she is...Paul check out the Punch....

Now here is the Bone thats from the same Family on your Knife as well matey, there are differences but lets see what the others think with the Bone - Oh man...didnt they just do things right in the day?

Here are two New York HJ Knives, the Top is Stamped Hammer Brand/ New York Knife Co. The Ebone New York Knife Co, both these Have the New York Knife Co. Punches...

These two HJ Knives - The top being a OVB and is exact as the above photo Hammer Brand HJ - same Patent on the Punches.

The reason why I wanted to show you the Punches that are plain and not spiraled is because they are the exact same as the shown here on the Buffalo Bill New York Knife... then we have the Spiralled on the New York Scout Knife, ALL the New York Knife Punches are laminated two-piece Tangs....

Now the Spiraled New York Version....

Duncan (see highlight) the last time I heard you say that is when we were leaving the rendezvous picnic, and I kept asking where Jack was:eek::D:D:D seriously though, thank you for your insight as I do see Camillus in the knife:thumbsup: (Now leave poor Jack alone):p

I truly see the Camillus connection my friend and THANK YOU for posting those. It's neat to find certain traits (in this case, both bone and punch) that show the existing DNA between knives:thumbsup: I have had many a Camillus/Sta Sharp/USA vintage knives (Cattle Knives and Jacks) with the strong Kastor influence shared among them.

Now I know I've handled every one of those pictured and I'm not quite sure why I ever gave any one of them back:oops::p

A very familiar term where I came from , but there was usually another Word after Jack .

Harry
In a local judge's race a few years ago, one of the candidates was named Jack. His opponent ran some very negative ads about him. He responded with some that said: "[opponent's name] doesn't know Jack!" Jack won.

lol...yep there definitely is another word Harry... Jack :poop: is what your thinking? :D

I consider my self lucky as well as Grateful to receive these knives from Paul my North Dakota Post Master- the problem is he keeps throwing in Knives from him as well!!!
Honestly though Paul- thats one Hang of a Trio my friend, I keep going back to look at the Bone on that Schrade and the Stockman - Whew.

Lets be honest, the Bone on my Camillus Trapper isn't an exact match- but when I viewed it my mind went immediately to this Knife.
