"Old Knives"

I hope everyone is doing well under these trying times, stay inside, and just keep away from people - we step outside tomorrow for the first time in 4 weeks - and allowed to back into level 3 after being in complete lock-down for a month!
My Postmaster in North Dakota has goodies for me but we thought we had better hold off sending for a wee while, so in the meantime I thought I would share this, but I haven't seen many???

Ok - sure- we have seen a few of the 10th Division Ulsters out there- not that they are a Dime a Dozen for sure when they come up rightly so they are snatched up- Quickly! but I spied this one here....

When I first saw this, the sellers photos were not that good, I could see the Bolsters and through the haze I thought..."mmm this has been messed around with" spying what looked like severe Bolster damage - but I couldn't tell properly, so I looked further into it...
The Bolsters are... like my Other 10th Division Knife - they are there, and peened down- there that'll do the job - these actually haven't been touched other than factory....

Now this is Rogers Stag Bone - the name gets flung around a lot, but its a really nice standard variation of the Bone - and what a shame that we get so "used" to looking at the Scouts / Utility Knives etc that have this quite Beautiful Bone..

When I was glancing through I thought - yes...a standard Ulster Knife of ths sorts- Blades are quite good- ok...I will keep looking...

Thats when I saw this- now help me out here Folks- I havent seen this before, nor have I ever owned a HJ or Knife with a Punch that has a Lock, I remember Charlie showing us an absolutely Superb HJ with a Bolster Lock for the Punch- which never have I forgotten.........

When I saw this, I have to grab this Knife to further look into it, yep...sure enough, a Punch with a Liner Lock!

Like I said I have the Ulster Division type Of Knife like this- without this feature, and many many other WW2 type of Utility and Scout Knives - without this, I know that Camillus make a Rope Knife with a Locking Marlin but have not seen these little guys with this feature.... have you ?
Would like very much to view yours if you have!
Wow!! I have looked at thousands of scouts with punches, but I have never seen that liner-lock example!! Great find, Duncan!
Such a straightforward way of making a punch safe to use!! It's great!! We should see more of then, but maybe cost was a factor; or ignorance!! (Who needs a stinkin' linerlock on their punch?? That sort of thing!!) With all the lock systems I've seen that's is the most simple to put into use!
Nice addition to your collection!!

Thanks, Rob. I figured it was post war, and being bone, before 1961. I'm still hoping to be a little more accurate than a twenty year period, but maybe that's not possible.

Thank You Charlie!
ok...well you haven't seen it either? I didnt think I had so hence the fact I grabbed the Knife.
Many Thanks kind Sir!

Getting back to some pick bone. Came to me half sanded and half rust, hate to clean one but I felt like I had to finish what they started. I am impressed with the quality of Valley Forge :thumbsup:

As it came to me.

My Challenge HJ came to me much the same way. I bought it from an craigslist ad and when I met the seller he said he picked it up at an estate sale. He said he didn't do anything to it except spray wd40 on it to keep it from rusting. If he was being honest then someone "spiffed it up" for the sale, with 400 grit sandpaper .

I used finer and finer grits and just removed most of the scuffing,I wasn't trying to make it look new just removed the scratches. Then I felt it just didn't look right shiny so I used it to prep food and eat with for awhile, gave it its old charm and dignity back imho.

If someone else has took some coarse sand paper to one or such, I see absolutely nothing wrong with finishing it in the right way. The original finish/patina has already been altered, and I personally can't stand seeing one all scuffed up from too coarse of "cleaning". I think your Valley Forge is superb and better for you finishing the job right.

Very unusual example my friend, and first one I have seen with a liner lock punch blade.

When a knife has been altered in a bad way and you can make it better then you definitely should.

If they are original then let them be! Buffers are bad!

I have a similar one, at 3 3/8" closed. Same blade layout, but with bail and lacking the threaded bolsters. It always struck me as a very handy little scout pattern. It had a big crack in the bone on the mark side and I put a little clear epoxy in it to stabilize things, this was one of my early acquisitions before I learned to avoid repairs unless necessary.
