"Old Knives"

My Challenge HJ came to me much the same way. I bought it from an craigslist ad and when I met the seller he said he picked it up at an estate sale. He said he didn't do anything to it except spray wd40 on it to keep it from rusting. If he was being honest then someone "spiffed it up" for the sale, with 400 grit sandpaper .

I used finer and finer grits and just removed most of the scuffing,I wasn't trying to make it look new just removed the scratches. Then I felt it just didn't look right shiny so I used it to prep food and eat with for awhile, gave it its old charm and dignity back imho.

If someone else has took some coarse sand paper to one or such, I see absolutely nothing wrong with finishing it in the right way. The original finish/patina has already been altered, and I personally can't stand seeing one all scuffed up from too coarse of "cleaning". I think your Valley Forge is superb and better for you finishing the job right.

The bone on this looks similar to my Krakauer-Zork-Moye's Socs knife; they may have come from the same factory.

Hey Jeff matey!
That’s great ! I agree the Leather looks a lot better! It’s good to know the Leather is fed now and won’t dry out any more!

I have a big workbench Linisher that also has a buffing spindle- where you can twist on the Buff wheels - one of those at careful speed with the boot polish would take it to next level!

My friend those Cattle's are fantastic knives! Beautifully built and as you say the Bone they adorns them is just so nice - actually underrated by anyone until you downs something time with one if these in front of you and look at the Bone for a while!!

I don’t blame you being smitten! I have 3 or 4 of those somewhere!
Thanks for showing us your fine collection that seems to be growing at an alarming rate Jeff!!  :D
I will have a look at my knives to see any number- Other than that, Ulster charts around the 40’s and 5o’s Jeff?

That's a nice one, Jeff! I agree with you Duncan! Those are great useful knives with interesting bone handles!! They seem to have come on stream around WWII!! Some of the parts match military issue knives, so maybe a surplus of parts influenced their production!!??

Hmm very curious, I replied to this post but it seems to have disappeared. Maybe I'm mistaken, anyways thats a great looking jack, with an interesting name! My HJ has darker bone on the pile side but I'm sure its original. It has lighter streaks in it as well. The bone on yours is a dead ringer though for the mark side of mine for sure. I think it was waynorth waynorth who told me that the punch on mine was an Empire patent, and that mine was most likely a contract for Challenge by them.

I am always on the lookout for any good examples of the many variants of schrade cut co jr cattle patterns.

I found this 8584 3/4 and I am very happy with it. It’s in nice used but not abused condition and is rock solid and snappy. I love the golden pearl cell handles, it’s such a great color. You can bet I will tote it around after a sharpening.

Nice and slim. When it comes to knives, for me, there is nothing else like laying hands on a nice old schrade cut.

I love the celluloid on this one. The celluloid looks like it is in really good condition, but the corrosion pattern has me wondering if the celluloid is outgassing.

Very nice one, Paul!! We Schrade lovers can always count on you to come up with an interesting one!!

Thanks Charlie.

I don’t think it’s gassing because there is no pattern staining on the punch blade or the springs. It looks like staining from being in a pocket with sweat or moisture. I have had the same corrosion pattern develop on knives I’ve carried in the hot and humid summers we have here.

Probably not 100% the right place to post this Knife- but in no way offending, this Knife you would probably be better off posting In Bernard Levines Thread of identifying knives.
We all would love to hear the news that ones knife to be that lost treasure - I am sure we have all thought that, this knife has a blade styling of a Philippines styled Blade- also close to a Mexican Styled blade- actually some of the Older Mexican Styled Bowie types had ( imo ) a favourable rough diamond look to them, I did like a few of them, but the Handle and Bolster and Guard work look neither.
I dont think that it's a re-handled older Knife because of the Shape of the End of the Handle - so I am think a home made knife from the start from someone who did a fairly solid job!

Cool, I will repost it in the thread you mentioned tomorrow unless a moderator or something can move it. Thanks

Jeff, Paul, couple of nice knives, really like those cell Schrade Cut Co's.

Picked up a Hibbard Spencer&Bartlett easy open jack with a fat spear in mint condition. I have the same pattern in a Camillus and the HSB is a dead ringer other than the bone, I find early Camillus bone can be many different jigging patterns, I think I have 5 early Camillus knives now and not one has the same jigging.

Nice set of knives, John!! Good going!!:thumbsup:I think TDs are great, and having them in NM condition facilitates study and understanding of those old patterns!!
Sometimes we are a yakking museum around here!!:D
