There was still one more common word I could have chosen at the end and lost. Maybe I should have piled as many of the possible remaining letters as I could into the fourth guess. I could have crammed three of the four remaining possibilities into my fourth guess, and that would have guaranteed I would get it on the fifth try.

Of course, as usual, I picked the "wrong" word on the 3rd try, which think was the same as Richard's.

Must be because I used up my lucky guess yesterday.

Got the correct pick in 3 but there were at least 4 other words that I could have chosen based on the same letter pattern, like POUND, MOUND, WOUND and HOUND. So, it was definitely a lucky guess. Easily could have been a "fail" instead. ;)

Seed words told pretty much the whole picture, except which of the four possible words to guess. And of course I guessed the right one on my fourth guess.

I really like CHALK as a third seed word after ADIEU and STORY when the first two don't give enough information.

Guess I got lucky again because the correct word was the only one that occured to me as the answer, even though there were apparently many other possibilities which made this puzzle difficult for many.

BTW, the correct word from the NYT Wordle site (which is the one I got) ends w/an E but many people on the Net are reporting that the word they got (or that their friends & SO's got) ended w/a Y instead. Referring to the original Wordle word list, the word ending in Y came before the one ending in E.

So, it looks like the NYT has deleted the word ending in Y from it's word list and people who are getting that word for an anwer are either using the pre-NYT version of the game or another game that is also using the original word list.

Shawl. That was why I said I think his third guess makes me warm inside. :)

I scraped by with a six today. After guess three had all but the 4th letter correct, there were three remaining possibilities for that 4th letter. I picked the correct one last. :thumbsdown: So yeah, there is some luck needed here.
