On Playing Wordle . . .

03/31/2022: Wordle 285 4/6

⬜⬜⬜⬜⬜
⬜⬜🟨⬜🟩
🟨🟩⬜⬜🟩
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

This apparently was a very hard word for a lot of people.
It wasn't looking good for me either after the 1st 2 tries but the 3rd guess revealed a key letter that led me to the solution.
Feel fortunate to have squeaked a Par 4 out of it. :)

This one apparently was hard for people too but, after 4 letters (3 in the green) were revealed in the 1st 2 tries, STOVE was the only word that came to mind.

Just lucky again, I guess! 🤷‍♂️

Meanwhile I was expecting a trick. Surely it won't be the most mundane choice out of all the possible words.... 🤦‍♂️

I thing the words are getting harder than, say, a month ago.

IDK about that.

FWIW, these are my average scores for the past 3 months:

Jan 2022 -- 4.32
Feb 2022 --3.96
Mar 2022 --3.65

Why's that? 🤷‍♂️

I certainly don't think it's because the words have been getting "easier" over the past 3 months.

My guess is that I'm just getting "better" (by being more careful/thoughtful, as well as experienced) at playing the game. While "luck" does have something to do w/it, I don't think it fully explains the trend.

And, having seen the answer list, I don't think there is any particular intention to make words any easier or harder w/in the list, although it is possible that some words may be grouped in that way from time to time.

So, I'd say that the relative degree of "difficulty" of the words is fairly constant overall.

Not **just** luck. Story was an excellent seed word for that puzzle.

I didn't play in January, but it seems to me that lately there are more of these puzzles where there are numerous words which share four letters which the correct answer. Bound, Found, Hound, Mound, Pound, Wound . . . Stoke, Stole, Stone, Store, Stove. Stuff like that. Words with none of the "conventional" vowels, like Nymph. Or maybe only one vowel. More double letters. Etc.

I'm using PANIC on Jan 15th as my starting point (which is Game #210 in the New Wordle Archive) but I've played all the games before that going back to #1 (for practice) and there are a lot of words in the game like that.

You can still play older games, even after the NYT killed the "Old Wordle Archive," because someone else created a "New Wordle Archive" that the NYT has not shut down yet.

See: The New Wordle Archive

Just click on "Choose" and enter any # game that you want to play all the way back to #1.

I have not "vetted" the list in the New Wordle Archive but it "should" be largely the same as the original word list, if the creator of the New Wordle Archive used the same list as originally published (without the edits made by the NYT) which you can find here:

Wordle Answer List

So, you can take a look for yourself w/o playing any other games if you like.

A very good score considering the various alternate spellings available based on just changing the 2nd letter.

Was looking for a word w/the O in the 2nd position w/more unused vowels and fortunately chose WONKY (instead of HONKY) because the W was the letter that helped me solve the puzzle. HONKY would have required another try.
