On Playing Wordle . . .

You guys are more "clever" than I am. LOL! ;)

04/10/2022: Wordle 295 4/6

Only 1 letter revealed by my 2 starter word. So, the choice of the 3rd word was critical to scoring a Par 4.

On the other hand, revealing all 5 letters (including 2 in the green) w/the 2 starter words in this puzzle made scoring a Birdie 3 pretty easy. :)

Might have scored an Eagle 2 if I used STORY 1st but I'm satisfied w/the Birdie.

---------------------------------

And another successful day with Quordle 76 with a 4/5/6/7 which I'd call a solid Par 4 score today. :)

Maybe we're both clever... that's got to be it.
For sure!

I'm trying a new tactic: instead of a seed word like "arise" that can give me a lot of vowels, I'm choosing ones that have the most used consonants (R, T, N, S, L) and letting the vowels take care of themselves.

I tend to play fast. I'd prefer to figure it out in 5 minutes and use 4 or 5 turns. I play scrabble similarly.

There are those who say that is the "better" strategy. Let us know how that works for you.

I prefer to go w/the vowel approach w/my 1st 2 words and then look for consonants not already revealed by them in the 3rd try. That's the approach I took w/today's puzzle in which my 1st 2 words only revealed 1 vowel in yellow.

So, had to think of a 3rd word that would reveal "key" consonants which I've found are the least common -- like P, L, W & K -- which paid of for me today.

I play fast until I don't and am forced to "think" about the next guess because not enough letters in their proper positions have been revealed.

I guessed this 5-letter word in 6/6 tries.

Can you guess this word?

Oh man, my fifth word was a shot in the dark. I don't know how any of you are getting words on the third try. But I'm on a winning streak still. :)

Got it in 5. Starts w/G and ends w/L.

Which puzzle is it?

I think it was this one:

AHAHAHA I GOT IT!

I guessed this 5-letter word in 6/6 tries.

Had to get up and take a little break but when I came back it just came to me.

I think it was this one:

I got it in 5 because it was one of THOSE words that can be spelled differently by changing just one letter.

Didn't bother "thinking" about it and just threw quick guesses at it.

1st guess started w/a G - wrong. 2nd guess started w/a B - wrong. Final guess (5th try) -- which was the answer -- started w/a Q and ended w/a T.

This took a few mins to figure out even w/4 letters revealed in the 1st 2 tries but I was able to get it done to match the other Birdie 3's. :)

The "lucky" choice of PLANK on the 3rd try was the ony reason I was able to squeak out a Par 4 in this puzzle.

Chose PLANK because it contained the only revealed vowel and 4 consonants (1 common and 3 uncommon) in order to try to reveal more letters. BLANK would have been a better choice but I didn't think of it at the time. However, it would still have resulted in a Par 4, even if I had.

---------------------------------

Reality strikes!

Failed Quordle 77 today 6/7/9/X (which broke a 3 game Quordle "win" streak) because all 4 words were seemed very obscure and none of them immediately occured to me. :(

Oh well . . . I'll post the words tomorrow to avoid spoiling the game for anyone else who's playing it today.

I think FLACK is more obscure than BLACK. CLACK, too. So it was good that you did not follow the "choose the more obscure word" theory on that one. Like I did. :( Or it might have given you a double bogie.

If you haven't heard of it yet, the NYT has created a companion program called "Wordle Bot" to analyze the quality of your approach to the game.

Here's an article that explains the operation of the program: NYT Launches Wordle Bot.

The only problem is that you can only use "Wordle Bot" if you have a subscription (paid or courtesy) to the NYT, despite the fact that Wordle is still free to play w/o a subscription. So, this is obviously an attempt to motivate people to subscribe to the NYT.

I've got courtesy access to the NYT and used the Bot to analyze a couple of my games.

Wordle Bot uses the consonant approach -- its start word always seems to be CRANE -- at least it was in the games I looked at -- and claims an average score of 3.4. My current average is 3.6. So, theoretically, I could "improve" my ave by about 0.2%, which is a negligble difference to me.

Here's a screenshot of how the Wordle Bot "analyzed" my approach to Wordle 296 today:

I did better than the NYT averages and than the Bot today and an analysis of some other games indicates that there was no clear advantage for me to use the Bot's approach, even though the program indicates that my approach is based more on "luck" than the Bot's. How they actually measure "luck" IDK.

So, I'm going to stick w/the way I'm doing it but I may still consult it from time to time just to see how my approach to the "game" compares to others.

You know what? I didn't even think of FLACK or CLACK. BLACK was the ONLY word that occured to me.

So, ignorance is bliss. LOL! ;)
