09/18/2022: Wordle 456 4/6

Hmm . . . another one of "those" words. Got the 1st
3 letters but realized there were at least 3 different
letter patterns possible for the last 2 letters with at
least 7 possible answers per WordleBot.

Lucky to get the 5th letter with the 3rd guess which
just left 1 possibility for the answer for me.

But, the current NYT average for this puzzle is just 3.6.
So, it apparently isn't as difficult as I imagined it to be.

09/17/2022: Wordle 455 3/6 CHUTE

8 possibilities per Wordle Bot but only 3 based on
the letter pattern that I had to work with.

Went with "___ ___ UTE" as the letter pattern and CH was
the 2 letter combo that chose 1st to fill the blanks.
FLUTE and GLUTE were the other 2 possibilities.

The final NYT average for this puzzle was 3.5. So, it
was also an easy puzzle for others.

Not hard but luck of the draw, the first two greens didn't narrow it down a ton. The vowel I picked could have been one of two and ironically the same two letter combos would have made words with either vowel.

So yesterday I had this:

And after my second guess I left it to sit for a while and browsed Bladeforums. I saw TK Steingass had opened his books again and went to his site and the first thing that popped into my mind while I was scrolling through his pictures was a Loveless-pattern chute knife he had made, and it occurred to me that would match my letter pattern, and lo and behold...

⬜🟨⬜🟨⬜
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

4 letters revealed in w/my 2 starter words
with at least 5 possible solutions based on
the letter pattern that I chose.

I used my "most obscure word rule" to make
the 3rd guess which fortunately was correct.

Threre was also 1 other possibility using
a different letter pattern that I fortunately
did not consider.

The current NYT average for this puzzle is 4.2.

7 different possibilities but only 2 based on the letter
pattern I chose and, of course, I chose the "wrong"
word 1st. Oh well . . . πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

The final NYT average for this puzzle was 3.6.

See what I don't get is how you always pick the right letter pattern...

See what I don't get is how you always pick the right letter pattern...

I can't really answer that but, as in this puzzle, there is almost always a letter pattern that is the most obvious and/or likely to lead to the solution

I wasn't the only 1 that chose the "right one" in this case. You apparently chose it too.

The only problem was how to reduce the possibilities which, in this case, required me to identify all of the likely words and then choose the one I considered the most "obscure"because I think that this is an inherent bias that the designer built into the game in order to make it more "challenging."

Here are also a couple of links to sites that describe some of the techniques that I use in choosing a letter pattern and analyzing a puzzle:

1) Use This Wordle Strategy To Win Every Time

I use very similar strategies for each guess as suggested in this link.

2) I've Played Every Wordle & Lost Only Once -- Here Are My Tips

There are 10 "tips" offered in this link. I use all of them in 1 way or another. Tip #2 is more a goal than a tip - "protect your streak" and avoid failure by any means possible. The rest are solid strategies for choosing a letter pattern and analyzing a puzzle.

The author of this link probably would have used a "throw away" word to try to reduce the possibilities in today's puzzle based on his Tips #2 & 3.

Good luck!

I switched to hard mode so I can't do throwaway words anymore, but thanks for the tips!
