On Playing Wordle . . .

Recent Wordle News:

The NY Times has apparently edited the "acceptable" list of words that you can use to make guesses on Wordle to remove anything that they deem "offensive" to make it "politically correct" for the times, which is silly (a 5 letter word) IMO.

See: The NYT Deleted "Slave" From Wordle

And, see: Wordle Blocks Certain Offensive Words

Don't know if this means that they've edited the list of answers or not. Upon my review of the list when I 1st saw it, I don't recall any "offensive" words on it but that would be in the "eye of the beholder."

---------------------------------------

Some people are also complaining on the Net that Wordle has become more "difficult" since the NYT bought the game but, based on my review of the answer list, that is not the case.

See, for example: Wordle Fans Claim Wordle Now Harder

Some difficult words like ULTRA, ULCER and CYNIC just happened to come up recently but, as far as I've looked, there has been no change to the answer list "yet." So, it just seems that it's just a coincidence that some harder word have come up recently.

@davidmary has been using this random word version of the game too.

I assume the the word set is the same or similar to the one in The Wordle Archive, since there is a finite # of 5 letter words in the English language. Either one will do but The Wordle Archive also gives you the option to play a Randon 6 Letter Game and certain challenges too.

Here's a Challenge that I created from The Word Archive that I think should require some thought to solve:

SGT1372's Wordle Challenge Word 02152022

that was a good one SGT, took me 5 tries to nail it down

Wordle "steaks" are apparently BIG on the Net and some people are really pissed that some changes that NYT has made has caused them to lose their "streak" data.

I use a VPN and a strip all cookies from my browsers and none of my game data was ever saved. So, I created a spreadsheet to save/track my progress which seems to have been a very "good thing."

My longest "streak" is 51 going back to the Game #191 on 12/27/2021 when I missed a word that I would not miss now.

However, I'm not sure how valid the streak # is since I didn't not play the past games chronologically from Game #1. I started working backward from where I started and then after awhile I started working forward from Game #1.

So, best as I can recall, my current "streak" is actually 37 starting w/Game #205 on 1/11/2022 when I believe that I started playing the game regularly.

All the words that I missed (6) were in "archived" games before that going back to Game #8 that I believe I missed because I didn't really know how to play the game yet and didn't take it seriously enough.

LOL! ;)

So, what "streaks" are you all working on?

Looking at the archive I am up to 173 with 3 misses, the last was #48 so that's a streak of 125 so far! Like you I made my misses early; hopefully I wouldn't repeat the same mistakes now.

On the daily wordle I have only been at it for 19, got them all so far but I think I missed 2 days due to life chaos.

Anyone gonna try my challenge above? https://metzger.media/games/custom-word/?puzzle=43667 Anyone got their own to post?

Just since I've been playing on my phone, so that I can share scores:

Nice challenge. Got it in four guesses. Not sure how to copy it here . . . but it was . .

Got it in 4. Would have gotten it in 3 if it wasn't such an uncommon word.

Actually my "guess" in row 3 was pretty uncommon to but the answer is even more so, which I guess was the point of the word's selection. LOL! ;)

Took a pic of the result and cropped it on imgur since I couldn't cut and paste it directly here.

Played this game "all wrong." Blanked in the 2nd try; struggled w/the available letters in the 3rd/4th tries and picked the "wrong" word on the 5th try and finally "found" the correct word that didn't occur to me until the 6th try.

Just one of those words that others will probably solve in 3, like I did with CAULK on . . .

Believe it or not, some people on the Net are claiming a "class distinction" between those who could solve this word easily and those who could not because arguably only those who work w/their hands actually knew that there is such a thing as CAULK.

LOL! ;)

You got it in 4? Fantastic!!!!

----------------------------------------

Tips for those who haven't tried it yet.

There are NO vowels in it. There are double letters in it. And it is a VERY uncommon word but it is in the dictionary.

----------------------------------------

No shame in failing to solve it. I would have failed it myself. ;)

That was cruel and unusual! After my third guess I had to cheat by googling.

You guys are so good at the game. I had to find something that would at least make you think, which it did.

But, now you've got a word that you can stump others with. ;)

Wow! I can only say this was a lucky guess. I mean, there was hardly enough info to figure the answer using logic.

Of course, I almost get it in 3 -- only 1 letter off -- and have to try again. This is trend for me in Wordle. See below.

Really messed up this game and AGAIN picked the wrong "word" on the 5th try before getting the "right" word on the 6th.

Had a nice 7 day streak going of solves in just 3-4 tries. Oh well . . .

FYI: it is apparently true that the NYT is "editing" the word list in Wordle.

On 02/15/2022 the word for Game #241 was supposed to be AGORA but this word & game was apparently deleted, making AROMA the word the following day/game the correct answer.

I guess they thought that AGORA and AROMA were too similar. Nonetheless, some people on the Net reported AGORA as their answer for the day/game apparenlty because they played the game that day before the change was made.

Anyone else get AGORA (instead of AROMA) for their answer to Game #241 here?

-------------------------------------------------

One other change I noticed was the deletion of the word PUPAL which was scheduled be used in tomorrow's Game #245 on 2/19/2022. They moved up the word used to be used in Game #246 on 02/20/2022 for use toay 02/18/2022 in Game #244 instead.

Guess they felt that this word was too "obscure" but its removal suggests that the NYT is indeed making the game "easier" as some on the Net have suggested that it is doing. Then again, there are those on the Net who are complaining that NYT's editing is making the game "harder."

Can't have it both ways.

My impression is that the NYT is simply trying to make the list of words comply w/its editioral "standards" which, so far, has resulted in the removal of what its editors consider rude/offensive, redundant or unnecessarilly obscure words and are not intentionally trying to make the game eaier or harder to play.

It's annoying that they feel that it is necessary to tinker w/the game in this way but it doesn't change the game. You still have to figure out what the word is in 6 tries regardless of what word it is.

BTW, no need to worry about me "cheating" by looking at the word list. I do NOT have a photographic memory and can barely remember what I read or wrote a moment ago, let alone memorize the word list.

The word in every game that I play is an entire mystery to me. LOL! ;)
