On the Road Again with Merle

Awesome sunset. Hopefully the Hank Jr was 80's era songs. If not, still beats the stuff currently being advertised as country music. Looks like a great two days
It was mainly songs from his “The Pressure Is On” album and its what’s currently playing on my little bluetooth speaker as well. “Weatherman” and “A Country Boy Can Survive” is my two most played songs of the year currently.
Looks like Merle is having a great time! He was looking forward to seeing the ocean! :D
He definitely was sir, it was a beautiful sunset and the pictures will serve as great memories

For the first day of the year I visited my grandmother and aunt with my girlfriend and enjoyed many of her and my aunts’ home cooked Armenian desserts and meals. Merle really enjoyed himself surrounded by all the yummy dishes! Here was a few of my favorites:

This dessert is called Kadayif and my grandmother makes this the best as well and it’s a personal favorite of mine. 😃

Excellent start to Merle’s time in LA, and those New Year’s Day treats look delicious!:thumbsup:

Hi friends, hope all is well! It’s been a slow couple of days but I’m looking to get adventuring again come this weekend.

It wouldn’t be a visit to LA without a classic LA Palm Trees 🌴 shot!

Merle also had the opportunity as well to meet some of his 86 Barlow comrades this week.

Here he is establishing his dominance over the others. He bragged how he has much better stories to tell of his adventures over the rest, and I agreed.

He also had an opportunity to meet all of my current Barlow’s from my humble collection.

I don’t usually take photos of all my knives but since I had them out I figured I’d take a shot of Merle with the majority of my current users lineup as well.

We ended the day yesterday with a nice walk around the block. I always make an effort to get out and walk the dog around sunset time. The colors of the setting sun is always beautiful and it makes me appreciate each and every day.

Stay tuned for more updates on Merle’s time in LA!

Nice shot with the palm trees, reminds me of when we lived in Arizona (right down to the blazing sun in your eyes). 😎

Merle looks right at home with your Barlows and other knives.

Happy Monday everyone! Over the weekend Merle and I resumed our adventure in LA by starting off with a visit to one of my favorite museums in LA, Travel Town! Travel Town is an old Train Museum that I've visited more times than I can count. The spirit of the old locomotives definitely lives on in Travel Town and you feel like you're stepping back in time every time you visit and step onto these old locomotives. This was another popular spot I used to visit with my Grandfather all the time.

We'll start this off with some photos of a legendary railroad engineer named Casey Jones. Casey Jones is credited with saving the lives of all the passengers and crew members on board his passenger train on April 30, 1900 in Vaughan, Mississippi in an accidental collision. Following the accident, it was reported that his body was discovered with one hand on the airbrake lever and one hand on the train whistle cord, it is believed that he died trying to warn crew and passengers of the impending collision as he struggled to slow the train down.

Right next to Casey Jones' sculpture is one of the famed San Francisco cable car's first operated in 1873. Unfortunately the indoor section of the museum was closed, it housed some very cool old classic cars and other interesting stuff.

These next few photos of Merle are inside the engine room of a long retired Union Pacific Locomotive.

"Founded in 1862, the original Union Pacific Rail Road was part of the First Transcontinental Railroad project, later known as the Overland Route. Over the next century, UP absorbed the Missouri Pacific Railroad, the Chicago and North Western Transportation Company, the Western Pacific Railroad, the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad and the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad."

Here's some more photos of our stroll through Travel Town, it was a real "Traditional" experience for us both.

And last but not least here is my favorite shot of Merle resting on an old Union Pacific Caboose.

I'm more than late to this party, but as they say, better late than never. I saw Merle not too long before he got on the train. He was with Marty Stuart and it was a hell of a show. If Merle would like to see some of the Missouri Ozarks, I'd be happy to oblige. Our Ozark mountains aren't all that high anymore, but the hollers sure are deep. Might even be able so show Merle how to catch a fish.

Anyway, cool thread.

Fantastic post, really well done! 😀 That looks like an interesting place, and it’s something in Los Angeles that I hadn’t heard about before.

I knew Merle would like trains... I mean who doesn't like old trains? 🤠
They’re the absolute best! Gotta just ride one now 🤠

Those two photos are definitely in the top three for the Travel Town experience 🤠. I’m hoping to visit a few more awesome spots soon to cap off Merle’s visit to LA and send him on his way!

A quick check in on Merle's visit.
Here's Merle (lower center) getting a glimpse of some of his sharp brethren that hang out in my cabinet.

That's just how I do it get a bit organised and then leave lots of random stuff around the organised bits and in various rooms.🤣

My girlfriend had to comment on all pictures I was taking with Merle and my uncle was a bit confused as well so I explained to him that Merle is on a trip around the world and he’s visiting Los Angles currently with me. He didn’t quite understand and it was pretty funny. 🤣

After the wonderful lunch my girlfriend and I visited our favorite nearest beach to watch sunsets, Will Rogers State Beach. What better way to end the first day of the year than with a beautiful California sunset on the beach listening to Hank Williams, Jr, and lots of other great songs. Looks like Merle enjoyed himself!

My NYE and New Years Day was different than past ones because of Covid this year, not being able to see a lot of my family members or have our traditional first day of the year get togethers. Of course we made the best out of it and the important thing is everyone is in good health.

I hope the first day of the year was great for everyone here on The Porch and I’m wishing everyone has a fantastic year ahead filled with health and love!

I HAD to listen to this after reading your beach post.

Our son was home on leave for the Holidays. Took him back to the airport yesterday. The airport in Bakersfield is on none other than:

After dropping him off we had to make a return at the Boot Barn. Its on Buck Owens Blvd, just up from Buck's Crystal Palace.

Hey everyone! As my time with Merle draws to an end I wanted to ask everyone in this thread if there’s any Stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame they’d like to see pictured with Merle?

I researched extensively to see if Merle Haggard had a Star but unfortunately it doesn’t seem like he does!! 😠 Please let me know! I’m going to go on one last adventure with Merle this weekend then he’ll be shipped off to his next destination. I still have my adventure from the Griffith Observatory to share but here’s some photos of Merle with today’s mail call in the meantime. Thanks for looking!
