optimum edge holding?

I saw a thread about a custom strider in rex that got me all kinds of excited ha ha... too bad the strider handle in no way appeals to what my hand seems to prefer.

Vanax75 you say, I've read the name before but I haven't seen much for specifics. Could you provide them?

Ray's been on that reading section for some time now....

Vanax 75

Carbon - .20
Molybdenum -1.30
Nitrogen – 4.20
Silicon - .30
Chromium – 21.20
Manganese - .30
Vanadium – 9.00

That's 31.8% alloys that produce carbides and it's 3rd Generation PM.

Not anytime soon as it's not available and won't be for awhile and Vanax 75 will be around $80 a pound or more.
Knifecenter puts the release date at July 2011, and you'll be waiting longer for a custom made knife. Also not sure how significant the price of the steel impacts the price of the knife. Even heavy knives barely come in at 8 oz, and the blade itself probably weighs less than half of that. I think if a knife were to be made in Vanax75, heat treatment and grinding costs will be far more than the blade steel.

In any case, the problem with the Vanax series is a lack of information regarding heat treatment and supply issues.

that does sound fun, what kinda hardness does it like?

but you say its not available, which doesn't help me at all

Vanax 35 will be available around that time, maybe.

Vanax 75, well the last I heard it won't be available for awhile yet.

Nobody really knows what it will really do yet and it hasn't hit production yet and that's if they can roll it out into sheets when it does.

i'd be all over the tilt if it appealed to me in anyway..

so we're back to ankerson's original proposals of the s series etc... rex would be cool. i know farid was working with it... i wonder if he'd be willing to go outside his box on styling though...

The max would be 15V if you could get someone to work with it, and it's not stainless.

i can live with not stainless when we're talking something so epic haha. i don't know anything about 15v... i got a pretty good taste for rex121 when i was reading that thread and the research attached to it.

i know s110v is more common. i really liked that rj martin overkill. it'd take some doing to get one of those..

whats the going rate on a kidney?

spartan, do you like the the spyderco gayle bradley? i know it's not super expensive or exclusive, but you get carbon fiber and M4 steel with good fit and finish. M4 @ 62+ HRC should give you excellent performance.

Ask any custom maker about 15V and after they choke and start coughing you will get an idea of how bad it is to work with.

ya know i've been eyeballing the gayle bradley ever since i started looking at knives. i almost bought one as my first nice knife. but i can't bring myself to pull the trigger. it doesn't appeal to me on an aesthetic level

then i guess we can pass on that one now can't we :D

s110v would be plenty. rex 121 would be over kill but awesome. i'm getting the impression that 15v is beyond that even. so where are we even? i think all this steel talk has us pretty derailed... i don't even have a steel picked out yet, and i'm no closer to a knife! :D

I would say S110V or S90V would be the best 2 choices in Stainless, or 10V and 15V for non stainless.

You really need to talk to the Custom makers and see what they recommend based on what they can do.

Carbon 3.4%
Tungsten 10.0%
Chromium 4.0%
Molybdenum 5.0%
Vanadium 9.5%
Cobalt 9.0%
Sulfur 0.03% (0.12%)*

is what rex has. i hear rumors of rc 72 on rex... tungsten carbides have got to be nasty

Finding a maker to work with it and do what you want will be a problem I think.

I would just keep your eyes peeled for another Strider release in S110V. I would try contact a dealer(or 5) like Plaza Cutlery and ask them to contact you if they find a folder in S110V or the other exotic steels you're interested in.
