optimum edge holding?

see but i can't stand how handles get thicker towards the non pivot end. hate it. hate it about my seb, and striders are massive for it. doesn't sit well in my hand. at all.

as for rex, i know farid HAS worked with the stuff, i dunno how willing he'd be to do what i'd like with it, but it'd be worth looking into. hell, if i could get him to make me a blade for the seb i could live with the less than ideal handle. the blade would be plenty of a distraction.

15v is said to be the most wear resistant huh. sounds like fun but not if there's no one that can work with the stuff

It's more like getting them to work with it, not that they can't, you know arm twisting, begging etc. :)

spartan, what about getting a kershaw shallot in S110V? i don't know what hardness kershaw ran those blade at, you could always have the blade re-hardened (maybe 62+ HRC).

i've seen those pop up every once in a great while on the exchange and while intriguing and cool, i am looking for something to knock my sebenza out of my pocket, not just a steel fix haha. i'd be all over that acies but ankerson's caution of zdp deeply concerns me

ZDP is OK at normal thickness, but once you get into really thin blades I wouldn't recommend it over the other steels.

And it's a Chromium Steel so the carbides are softer than the Vanadium carbides.

Buy a S110V shallot, then pay someone to custom make you titanium handles(framelock of course) with IKBS and all kinds of cool anodizing:thumbup:.

I was interested in a blade swap for my Sebenza as well, but I wasn't sure how close the tolerances would be.

there's nothing wrong with ZDP, you said that the knife won't see hard use. i doubt ankerson will tell us how much 5/8" manilla rope he cut testing ZDP , but im sure it was alot. also, i believe he had the edge set to 30 degrees inclusive, running the edge at 35-40 degrees would have probably helped with chipping (but not with the test).

It's wasn't much at all, like maybe 15 cuts on 1/2" rope and some cardboard and it was done, but that was a blade that was really thinned out.

That's why I said at normal thickness it's fine, it did fine on 5/8" rope and cardboard.

ok.

in your cutting tests, the ZDP falls into category 4, do you remember what knife you were using?

then maybe i should look into the acies a little closer and drool over a rex custom... 15v may be more wear resistant but the hardness of rex is more cool to me haha

so in your opinion, would the AG russell acies satisfy my desire for high hardness wear resistant steel? i understand its not on par with the vanadium steels, but it does have a slightly longer blade [something i like] and shorter handle [another thing i like] than my sebenza and i can only assume excellent fit and finish, on par with that of the sebenza, no?

Endura 4 FFG at 65 HRC.

^ thank you sir.

if you like the acies, go for it. im pretty sure ZDP @ 64-66 HRC will give you more performance over S30V @ 58.

well the chipping concerns me, as well as general quality. the sebenza is notorious for setting the bar, will i regret clipping an acies in its stead?

chipping, what are you planning on using the acies for? i EDC'd my endura 4 FFG for about a year straight and i didn't have any chipping issues. even ankerson said that at normal thicknesses ZDP is fine.

if you want me to put your ZDP concerns to rest, i'll sharpen my endura 4 ZDP FFG today to about 17-20 degrees per side and use it to cut open a coffee can. i can post pics this afternoon.

it would be used as edc. god only knows what i'll need to cut in a day, but it has included things such as cardboard and rope. your confidence inspires me sir! i'll see if i can't work on liquidating my seb.

now i guess the decision is between trying to trade for it, or sell the seb and buy new haha.

Not sure if ZDP is really that chippy. My edge was damaged after a couple weeks of trimming onions before I figured out that cutting the roots was like the equivalent of slashing at dirt because of the leftover dirt still stuck on the roots, which also damaged my M390 blade. The edge was easily fixed in about 10 minutes on my Work Sharp starting with the 180MX belt and using 5 passes per side for each belt. Now the chip on my Galyean Pro Turbulence in CPM154 is a REAL chip given that I inadvertently cut into steel baler wire multiple times(didn't realize how close to the plastic wrap the wire was), and a couple of small dings are still left in the edge after some moderate metal removal.

Performance is certainly above S30V, though not quite as good as CPM-M4 or M390(in my own use). To be honest, when spending over $500 for a knife, I'd want better performance for the money, with the steel suiting my specific needs.

Of course, I feel a need to ask, but are you equipped to sharpen something like CPM-15V? Given that S90V only took about twice as long to sharpen on my Work Sharp, I know I'm good to go:thumbup:. I can imagine someone cursing out loud as they go on their 6th hour trying to polish out the scratches on a 15V edge using a waterstone:D.

im going to open a coffee can right now. i will post before and after pics in a few minutes.
