My Stick, that's a lot of verbiage for someone who cares naught what anyone thinks! I've said all I intend to. You made your call.
First of all , Freewheeling, I think you have come to a point where you should be still and think about the things you have said and at some point try to dig yourself out of the whole you have gotten into, I don't say this in anger, but as someone who has been in the hole myself.
Secondly, we all have an inner voice, I choose to believe it is God speaking to me, when He prompts me to an act of kindness , I try to respond in the right manner. It has never been part of a business plan, that is ridiculous, I started selling knives out of the the love of collecting and to this day, love what I do , I thank God daily for the blessings I have received, I do not operate from greed, the need for success, or any of the things that some businesses find important. Do I like to make money, sure I do, but for me it is like how good can this get ? It isn't like corporate America trying to be the best, I do it because I love it, I just sit and shake my head at the way God blesses me daily.
Third, you don't step in and replace a knife for someone after he carelessly loses it, He is learning a lesson, like all of us have learned before, the pain of the loss is the teacher, next time he has people over he doesn't know, he will remember the pain and put away his valuables, if you take away his pain by replacing the knife, he learns nothing. This was the biggest mistake I made raising my daughter, I couldn't stand to see her experience the pain , so I always tried to fix it.
Fourth, I appreciate all of you as friends and thank you for defending my reputation. You guys are more than customers to me, you are part of the thing I love. Relationships are the only thing that matters in life, and the only thing you have a chance of taking with you when you die.

I will continue to extend that opportunity by expressing gratitude, which I believe is the antidote. I may even express gratitude beyond their comfort zone if they've "sphinctered up," because while it may be rejected it usually doesn't make things worse. Unlike Stick, I *do* care what people think, and I really don't believe there is anyone "above that" because we all imitate the good and the bad we see in others.

Well, needless to say I'm more than impressed with that. I realize that my statement about you was inappropriate, but at the time felt that I was merely passing on the kindness of a fellow forum member. That was OK, but I shouldn't have done it in that way. As for the faith, I agree with John Paul II (though I am not Catholic) that the original sin is envy. I don't claim to be above it. Everything bad that happens in the world can be traced back to an imitative desire, another word for envy, no matter how complicated the interference patterns become in an effort to hide a simple truth. I'm really an uncomplicated, but over-educated, person. I try to keep things simple. If envy is the cause of all problems gratitude is the remedy. It's more important than forgiveness because only gratitude can be fore given without increasing resentment. Even this is too complicated for some people though. Life is a challenge.

I have seen it done and was impressed with the results on another forum, but I take your point. Gifts create moral hazards. There is a whole anthropology on this that we should discuss some time over a beer. I may have to start drinking beer again to do it though.

You are a class act, sir. I always knew that. I hope Stick and I can work things out, but for the time being I'll just ignore him. I've said all I need to say, unless someone wants to bring up some grievance I haven't considered.
