OT - Watches !!

Those Traser H3s are cool, but a non-starter for me. The DOE gets cranky about "extra" radioactivity in our work area.

I've got a Luminox 3100, which is almost the same as the H3's.

I have looked into the radiation output of watches like this and found that the amount released is very very low. A study done in Britain found that a person wearing a plastic tritium watch experienced 4 microsieverts of radiation from it. The average annual background radiation experienced by a person was found to be 2100 microsieverts. So in comparison the watch makes almost no difference.

Is the DOE (Department of Energy?) really telling you that you can't wear it?

I worked for a Department of Defense contractor over the summer, and they never said a word about my watch. I was working with relatively sensative equipment too.

WOW, here's a nice Omega I found while looking around...

I'm still working on my MB Microtec watch Traser H3. It's held up ok so far. I wish it had a sapphire crystal though. I've currently destroyed 3 swiss army watches, 1 Seiko Monster, and 1 G-Shocks. I'm not sure I have the guts to break 4 digits on a watch I'll probably destroy anyways. Maybe I'll go for an Omega someday.

Technically, it is Naval Reactors that imposes that rule.
When I worked at our laboratory in Pittsburgh, it wasn't an issue. Now I work in the facility that processes spent naval fuel. When we leave the work area, we pass through a whole-body radiation detector that can "see" the watch, which causes the alarm to sound, etc.

Superluminova works just fine, thank you very much, without the complications.

oh ya, well im wearing a timex 1440 sports pocket watch, wich is currently being held to its carabeener by zip ties. so ha!

(it was the cheapest non hideous thing they had at target...)

I have a Seiko kinetic, which has sat dormant for a year now. I have gone through two pins on this mother and I am tired of it. I want some screws or a solid post on mine and that's all there is to it.

Seiko makes a Super Oyster band that looks smart and comes with tougher Fat pins to hold it on. I don't know if your current case will handle it though.

I wear a Marathon TSAR with tan Zulu strap every day because it's bombproof. I like to think of it as the Busse of watches...

That is the one I have. But I think mine has a dark face. I am going to toss it up on epay or the exchange I think. Not wearing it these days.

You're right it is one heavy piece of timekeeping apparatus.

I am wearing my Omega Speedmaster Automatic right now (I have 2). Two Tag Heuer, a Breitling and a Movado auto. Still no Busse knife (can't afford them ;P).

VERY COOL. I love watches and use to collect them. I have had many and have wittled it down to a few. I am very abusive to watches just like I am to knives and bikes. So it takes a really good one to satisfy me. I'll post pics later as I just got back from a cruise and am trying to recover.

Omega Planet Ocean - 45.5mm
Orange Bezel / Steel Bracelet

Too many hobbies, never enough time or money!

Today I am sporting a Zodiac V-Wolf, rated to 1000ft depth... I tend to dive about 15 feet, so it should cover it ;) I have a few others, Zodiac, Oris, etc...
