Our "Front Porch" ....

Was in NC a few months back and had one fly up two feet from my face and hover for a few seconds and fly off. Such cool creatures. Only the second one I had ever seen.

They really are amazing. Migrate away (in Winter) over 1000 miles and come right back to their favorite feeder the next year.
I can't find my truck in Walmarts parking lot.
Will fight til the death, diving full speed (from 80 feet in the air) at a rival slamming into him at full speed.

Yeah, I can't wait to get up to NC full time and enjoy a little bit of the nature up there. Saw lightning bugs when visiting my dad a few weeks ago for the first time since I was a kid. Loved watching my daughter's face light up when she saw them.

Pretty quite on this thread, thought I'd give it a bump see what you guys are up to. I went to a family reunion this past weekend like so many of us do in the summer. An interesting twist of events occurred that I'd like to share. I have an elderly uncle that just turned 90, but he is still quite active both mentally and physically. I was cutting my steak with my XM 18, when I laid it down next to my plate my uncle picked it up and was looking it over with admiration. He asked me if I have the switchblade knife and an old 1950's 6.5 Italian Army rifle that he gave me about 40 years ago. I said that I do and have treasured them all these years.

His grandson was standing next to us who is in his 20's and asked what rifle, what knife? The grandson is Frankie and his grandfather is Uncle Frank. Frankie is an avid hunter and outdoorsman. So I told him that his grandfather gave me his army issue rifle and a switchblade knife many years ago. I also said that they no longer belong to me, they belong with you, I'm giving you your grandfathers rifle and knife. My uncle started to cry and gave me a hug and said thank you. I knew that if my uncle still had them he would want his grandson to have them.

Uncle Frank figured out how to close my XM and started to put it in his pocket, I grabbed his wrist as he was sliding it into his pocket and took my knife from his hand, he just smiled at me and said nice knife! Later on I felt bad, especially because he gave me his rifle and switchblade, I went to my Jeep and took a ZT 0560 out of my grab bag. I found Uncle Frank and said here this is for you.

Damn family reunions, things never go as planned!

Final, I hope I'm not to blame for the ZT being in your grab-n-go. However, it's a win (in a way) for both of you; because you keep your XM and he gets a damn fine ZT.

Ha funny you said that N2K!

Let's be honest, the ZT likely will be little missed.

Only on the way to/from the airport do I grab it out of my bag. Might have come out once or twice..to hand to another while doing stuff/things but in all, it just sits in the bag.

I second that! F.O. is indeed a class act - We are blessed here on RHK..... I believe, We enjoy a concentration of "Class Acts" brought together by a product line born of a "Class Act".
No wonder we seem to cleave to this virtual locale with all that it offers.
Here I thought it was just the knife all this time ;)

Thanks for the compliments, however since posting on this forum I am continually impressed and honored to be among the regulars and now with the influx of so many great new members. We come from all over the world and all walks of life, however we all seem to possess a moral compass. Our interactions show compassion and respect for each other something of a novelty these days. We all have a common bond, beyond the sharing and acquisitions of Hinderer Knives.

I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to talk with Rick and Rob and the crew several times. Besides making great knives their humble and reachable attitude align themselves with so many of us.

We are also so fortunate to have the best moderators on Blade Forums and especially the outstanding job Rubi does, makes this sub forum a great place to meet and share experiences, pictures and information.

Wow, great story FO. Made me think back to my great grandad and the great man he was reading it.

Many of us are very fortunate to have had or known Great Men (in our lives) especially during our formative years when we really needed them.
I believe one of our greatest challenges as a Civilization is .... are we going to be or become "those Men" for our youngsters that need them in their lives too?
For what I may or may not be, I would not "Be" if it weren't for the many (I was blessed) Great Men that served as role models in my life.
Teaching by just "being" how to be a good Man to a young and watchful boy.
Representatives of the Greatest Generation were present in many of our lives but, sadly they have almost all passed or will in the next precious few years.... then what will we be left with? Answer: Us, at least the "Us" that are old enough to have lived and benefited from Uncles and Dads and Grampas that lived through the Great Depression, WWII, Korea .
The youth of today and the future of our World will be shaped by our Legacy, what We are able to bestow - the repeating of stories and acts of heavy lifting that the Men of our memories did for us.
Will We be up to the task?
Can We get the "not quite so pie eyed" young current versions of Us to look away from their electronics of choice long enough to listen or to care?
As a Dad of Four(4) teenagers ... I am optomistic but not without reservation. Parenting should come Sans rose colored glasses - You need clear fields of view to include the 6 0'clock position in order to hope to stay one step ahead.
These are the types of conversations its nice to have a Front Porch to discuss :)

I agree 100% that there is something MORE than just the knife that brings us together here. I own many knives, all kinds of customs, but there is something about the Hinderer "culture"(??) that exists. Hard to put my finger on it but there is a high standard. Perhaps it has to do with the appreciation of the high standards of the knife and makers. Perhaps it has to do with Rubi's diligence in calling out those who have "lesser" standards and they just don't hang around the forums long. Lord knows we've seen our share of trolls, haters, and people who just don't get it and so will never experience it or understand it. But I know it exists because I feel it. It keeps me coming back. I'm sure there are haters reading this and rolling their eyes at my stupidity!!! Roll away!!!!

Roger that Map..... and keep on rollin' :) Here is my Lunch story (hope you guys and especially F.O.) appreciate it you will see why I say that in a minute.
I'm at lunch thus the lunch story and the little sandwich shop I eat at is like a lunch shop version of here , mix of regulars and the occassional new face.
The UPS guy walks in (now you know the reference to F.O.) nice guy you can tell by his face. The typical banter starts up with the owner and we sit down adjacent stools and he and I start teasing about the Owner who is a buddy of ours but he and I don't really know each other.
Well, one thing leads to another and we start up a convesation and as I originally thought he is indeed a nice guy. We are sharing stories about this and that and I find out he is a Dad too with Sons about the age of mine. His are going to be Eagle Scouts and He and his 17 year old son are Firemen here locally.
Well, I guess you know what comes next.
I ask him if he likes knives and of course the response is in the affirmative so out comes my XM.
I always enjoy, never tire of the look on the face of a knife lover who has never seen let alone held an XM. Rick/Rob I'm sure you know what you do everyday when you turn on the lights but.... I'm honored every time I get to share "the Story"
So, I start filling in the details of what he is clearly appreciating and then I say, " and guess what? You and your Son actually get to own one of these If you so choose" - a True Honor and recognition of what you do. I explained who Rick and Rob are and that they build these amazing tools for many but especially for those who "need" them.
Great Lunch.
New Friend and possibly (likely) a new Hinderer Fan.
Good Day :)
