Outdoors Picture of the Day

Saw this on my hike today...begging me for food!

Those Great Horned owl chicks are incredible.
What a fabulous creature they grow to be too.

Thought I'd 'duck' in here with my picture of the day (from Earth Day) taken in Burlington, Ontario, Canada while having a barbeque.

I've had a minor injury to my left knee that is keeping me from going out and getting fresh pics. It sucks because I'm missing a lot of the dogwood and redbud blossom shots I hoped to get this spring. Hope you'll settle for a shot from a couple months ago.

This is an access road to a small cemetary on the left, between my Mother-in-law's house, and my Brother-in-law's house. The oldest markers date around the turn of the century (1900's, that is) and a lot of them show dates very close together- high infant mortality. :(

tonym,

Great shot, very touching. She looks so happy.

Thanks man, she's a trooper, we walked that trail all day(about 5 hours), and she had a smile on her face the whole time! I can't wait to take her out again with me.

By the way, I checked out your link, AMAZING PICTURES!!

You can just barely make out the breakers in the distance through the overcast/crappy weather.

tonym,

Thanks! My website is sadly out of date, with few pictures; but I'm glad you liked them.

I hope this isn't too graphic for here. I thought you folks might enjoy seeing a glimpse of the miracle of life, which few get to witness... even if it is not one of my best compositions. Below is a picture of the birth of an elephant seal.

dragonflies. The first is a blue dasher in the obelisk position. Some types of dragonflies assume this position in an attempt to keep as much of their bodies as possible out of the sun at midday.

And this is an eastern amberwing, one of the smallest found in florida. My girlfriend says it looks like tigers eye.

I hope this thread continues as all the photos in it have been great to look at. While neither as epic as the vistas nor as magnificent as the mammals and birds posted here, I have a whole bunch more photos of bugs I've taken in the past month or so to add to it.

your website is great, Mike. Between the photos and the info, I have spent more than a few and less than a hundred hours there. :) Updates would be awesome. And, btw, what about that tripod that weighs nothing? I'm almost convinced that it is a riddle or koan...

As for the photo, I would have to say that it is of my favorite sort in that it is greater than the sum of its parts. The miracle of birth, as you said, or ritualized mating behavior, the fellowship of a group, the suspense of the hunt or even the agony of death. I think that any artist, regardless of medium, who is able to capture the essence of any thing of this sort has created something special.

Or, in other words, I like it. :D
