Outdoors Picture of the Day

Ok, someone's got to divert this from insect porn. (great pics though) I don't need anymore vices:D Here's an acorn that is just going about it's business.

Just call me Larry Flynt! :D

Stink bugs, I believe.

Nice thread.

Best regards,

Dave - why did you have to go and post an acorn with a nipple

:):):)

(P.S. You have to do a search for the Brian Jones fungus thread)

Alright, alright, I get the picture. For tomorrow's post, no bug porn.

Nice shot, by the way.

Friday night right before we received 8 inches of snow.

Sat afternoon, after good portion of it had melted.

East of Maniitsoq, Greenland in 2000

This was taken with my first digital camera, a Nikon E600. It was under a megapixel and around $1000; a thoroughly unimpressive camera. It's amazing how digital cameras have advanced in a very short time!

Turner, are you near Fargo? Nodak man myself, just curious as to your location.

Paul

I indeed live in Fargo.

Thought so with the recent spring weather we just had, it was a pretty simple guess.Just to the west of you in Valley City. Your pic's are a common and cool site. Just saw a Turkey Vuture today (No Camera) or could've added it here. Tried to email ya as to not take away from the theme of this thread (disabled :() Liked your pic's!!!

Did you sneak up on the snipe or was he/she oblivious to your presence?

I'm always interested in what makes an animal feel comfortable around me (or at least tolerate my presence). I worked in animal hospitals for 7 years and found that dogs and cats, at least, can read intent pretty well. i.e. most know they're not there for anything enjoyable, or that you are the agent of such, whether it be in their best interests or not. I think Evolute might be Zen in this regard. I don't want to pull this thread away from pics, but I am curious if anyone notices anything regarding their state of mind when getting good shots of wildlife. The funny thing is, that when I'm most oblivious, that's when animals are around (or noticed by me). As soon as I tell someone else, "hey, look at that" they're gone. Then again, that's one of the best things about photography, you can experience it individually and also share it after the fact. Thanks again for a great thread!

General I was out walking the archery range and came across this feller. Closed the gap to about 8 yards, I think he was totally confused with the snow.

Datsgor,
Your pic of poison oak got me thinking (yes it is painful for me to think but..).
Can we start a thread with pics of poison or simply dangerous plants?
Could be very helpful to those of us that are learning.

Now that is an interesting idea!

Hi :)

Taken in Rila mountain, Bulgaria, AUG 2007. Carried VIC SAK One hand trekker.

These are older photos but I figured I'd better stop posting shots of bugs, at least for awhile. :D

First is a great blue heron after some hurricane or another. The tree it is next to (the one it is on is a melaleuca, imported as one of the worst ideas florida land managers ever came up with) is an australian pine that was blown down out over the water. The australians are actually more closely related to oaks than pines and are also called ironwood. Not quite as tough as desert ironwood but its still a pain to cut while standing in a rowboat.

And a pair of wood storks. These fellas are endangered but there are days when you wouldn't know it. I've seen them circling on the wind in flocks of 5 dozen or more and soaring to silly heights, over 20,000 feet I would estimate.

"I fell in to a burning ring of fire..."

That is amazing, almost a pastel look to it. Were you shooting with a diffusion filter of some kind? Some other sort? I like it very much.

No filter. It's a straight shot. There was some odd, plasma like substance, whipped up by the wind, moving rapidly Southward, low upon the water, miles out to the distant horizon.

It was a weird sunset.
