paper sharpening wheels - when your time is important to you

i'm glad you like them knivesandguns. just be safe when using them. have you read my tips page? anyone who is worried about putting too much wax on the abrasive wheel shouldnt worry about it too much. it wont hurt anything but you'll learn when to put it on and how much. i take my index finger and rub the wax in evenly. any excess will come off on the blade and wont hurt anything.

Yeah I looked there, thanks. The dealer that showed them to me had sharpened with the wheels for a while and had similar tips'n'tricks. He does our local gunshow and most of the people around the area go to him for sharpening.

Right now I just have to learn how to hold the knives nice and steady as I go along. I think steadiness will come with practice.

Question for you Richard, some of my knives, mainly my 154CM and S110V I may have spent too long on the rouge wheel, and they're too polished. How would I go about getting it "EDC" sharp? (Able to cut cardboard, etc)

Thank you!

after making a few passes on each side check the blade edge. you might not need to get the full width of the edge highly polished to cut good. you can have a 1/32" wide polished edge that will slice newspaper just as well as one with a 1/16" or 3/32" wide polished edge. i sharpened a knife for a friend and had the edge shaving sharp in a few passes. looking at the edge showed just a narrow line that was polished

Ok thank you, I may just start over on these two.

how are you sharpening your knives? is your wheel rotating to you with the knife held at the 1:00 position or a little past?

knives&guns,Rich got my S110V Shallot hair-poppin' sharp on those wheels,of course he has a lot more practice.Keep it up,you'll get it ;)

P.S.Rich do you EVER sleep??:D

no not really. i hurt too bad to sleep

Sorry to hear that.:(

Sadly,I know the feeling, almost makes me want to pick up the bottle again for a good night's rest.(I said almost;))

Back on topic, sorry for the hijack

Richard,

I took a look at your site, but I gathered that the site linked only sells the wheels. Do you have any links to good/decent motors?

The dealer showed me to have the motor facing me, so the wheels are rotating toward me. I hold the knife edge down and have the wheel work on the blade while I move it from base to tip horizontally. I still get some freaky grinds doing this, as I'm not holding it steady enough, but kitchen knives I don't really have a problem with.

Maybe I'll take it back to kershaw, have them restore the edge for me so that I can touch it up on the rouge wheel.

Thanks for the encouragement  I have a feeling that I'll get the hang of it, all of our kitchen knives are vorpals currently. :D

@Richard^^^ I hope you start to feel better. Man, I'd hate to not be able to sleep. The only time I couldn't sleep was when I got something dysentery-like from my trip down to Honduras earlier this year--trip was wonderful though.

thg, for electric motors you might check with a place that puts in furnaces. there are some blower motors that have 1/2 hp motors mounted seperately. these will work just fine for the wheels. knivesandguns, check your email. as for feeling better that will never happen unless they find a cure for fibromyalgia that works. no meds have worked on me yet and i have taken some that would knock out a horse but not me.

Praying for you Richard. :)

I'll check my email ASAP, thank you so much!

Richard I wish I had seen your demo's before I purchased the Tormek. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with Tormek, and no! it's not for sale. I went to the local Woodcraft on the way home from work last night, and bought the Razor sharp wheels and stopped by H.F.and picked up a 6 inch grinder. Got home and put it all together, and tried it out on an old cheap fillet knife. A couple of pulls across the cutting wheel, and a sorry attemp at the polishing wheel and I had a blade that would shave. I still need to find the right angle and technic, but shaving sharp that fast is amazing. Thanks, tz

i'm glad you like the wheels. a friend has a tormek but likes the wheels better. he does custom remodeling so the tormek works good on his wood chisels but he likes for me to touch them up and make them even better. just be careful and read my paper wheel 101tips page. i have a lot of good information there. i also offer phone help if you send me your number. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=608864

Thanks for all the info on paper wheels--Our local W.C.does carry the system--I did see in my research that a 10" wheel set for the 8" grinder was recommended because it gives more room for the hands and the handle-- on another site the author turned the buffer around and used the top of the wheel. I apologize for not giving credit to the authors above..Thank-you all for your help--I am getting excited about getting started with this....Steve

Just picked my Razor Sharp at the local Wood Craft store and used my $10. off Fathers Day coupon. After reading the instruction and referring to Richards words of wisdom and a learning curve period--I was sharpening knives, chisels, and even a couple knife blade blanks before handles [this could create a safety issue]--wow we are talking sharp here-I even did the shave the paper thing---Thank-you for the great thread--Steve

i just bought another set of wheels to keep on hand. after sharpening 246+ folders and 30 fixed blades for the blade show i found it necessary to have more than 4 sets of grit wheels.
