Pay it forward 8 - "THE OCHO"!

hey Bladechick, I finally got that BK11 in the mail to ya. Be careful with it, cuz it's sharp! I mean really really sharp! And let's start a new thread already.

We need to get some new people involved otherwise the well runs dry. Does anyone think that restarting the thread helps with this at all. It certainly has seemed to in the past. I know when I see some super long threads I just "forget it" because it seems like its too hard to break into the convo at that point. I'd vote for starting a new one if loose ends are pretty much tied up here.

I think it helps. even at the top of the thread list, I usually avoid the multi-paged posts because I dont want to jump in "mid-meeting", and I don't want to start from page one and read all the stuff to get to page 8. And it does seem like each reincarnation of PIF starts out with a ton of posts.

I think there's a basic difference between this thread and the snarks and "what traditional are ya totin?" threads. You don't have to really follow those threads. You can just jump in whenever and you dont feel like you have to know whats going on.

These PIF threads, though, make you think you need to know whats going on and when they get too long they can become sort of cliquish with just the dedicated few being involved.

I bet if you started a new one, maybe with some sort of push to get new folks in, things would get going and fast.

Still thinking about the best way to attract new people in. Any bright ideas?

Start it with a pay it forward. Include in title, then erase once claimed. I agree with everything in your post. A fresh start is good, keeps a little "control group" from forming.

Only problem with that is if there's someone hopping on to sponge (not that it's a problem, I just tend to think cynically), it's not as apparent as someone who is frequently PIF'ing stuff...The old pif thread usually disappears pretty quick.

I guess just try to remember whos taking things from you, thats the only real way. But this is a thread in good faith of humanity! so have some good faith Damn it!

As offishul PIFistorian, I calculate 8053 posts total as of this one.

and Pete, ya may want to edit for language, some got their hand slapped once for that already.

Well this little debate brought us out of the woodworks huh? It's nice to see the buzz of activity. Still waiting to hear from a few folks and get the ok from the elder statesmen. Lol. I'm thinking we go to 1500 and then strt the new thread. I'm actually on my way to work right now and TBH while I'd be honored to strt the next thread I don't have a knife worth more than 20 bucks in my accumulation (though for me some of them are priceless). I have a feeling if you could attract some more traditional folks over and get them interested you'd have more activity. Not sure though.

But what I personally like about this thread isn't the rare big ticket items (though they're more than generous and definitely generate a lot of excitement) but the general spirit of "hey I got this thing it's valuable for use, maybe not a collector piece but I'm sure someone would get a kick out of it and I honestly don't need it" lol. That was a mouthful. Lol. Anyways that's what I saw in the beginning and it'd be good to see it again.

My thoughts on this are varied. I probably have several good useful things I could give away but most stuff I have is packed from my current move, so I hardly know what I even have or don't have at the moment. I think the generosity is amazing as a whole and have seem some very interesting items that I would be more than thankful to have. My issue is that for the most part I feel that there are probably people who need them more than me, and I could not bring myself to accept anything until I had at least sent out a couple items. Hopefully this idea is still going strong once I have my things unpacked.

I say we wait till 1500, but that's mainly because its getting late and we might as well finish this one out tonight. also waiting to hear from a few more members who had strong feelings about not ending this one.
