Hmm. I wouldn't think that you'll have many issues if it comes into problems, just take it to the forum right.

Now, Ethan has stated that if you break a 16 while using it as a prybar, then maybe you should've picked another knife since he has knives that are built for that; the 16 isn't one of them.

Which seems fair enough.

Nothing much to do with your particular case. Just a little little insight into what one can expect from a Becker. Which is basically just common sense.

Sorry kabar ousted you for having a heat treat issue. That seems unpolite on all fronts to me.
Yeah, I'm pretty fond of the Beckers, and kabar does has a decent warranty. I just feel the extra money is worth it for that absolute coverage on an ESEE. Again though, they are not my absolute choice in everything, just a preference. I'm gonna make an ESEE fanboy outta you! Haha.

Wow man, that's awesome!

I would've thought that it was an expensive "special" opinel.

How did you go about doing that? Just a cigarette lighter?

I've got some burn marks in mine but for a different reason; it just so happens that being sharply stamped out of steel, the backs of Opinels make decent fire strikers, I do it with the blade closed for obvious safety reasons.
Yep. Or candle. Dont want to get smoke on it; you want to actually scorch it, then quickly rub it down while the whole thing is still hot. Some people do it way better than me. They also use the technique in Japan to treat wood, except they torch the entire surface black, scrape it off, and then polish/stain in to bring the grain out.

HOLY "Tootsie Frootsie", That's a big knife!

So you like the warranty but do you feel the steel is any better?

Honestly? Yes. For two reasons, and one of them isn't even heat treat. The first reason is that I have pounded on that Junglas with all kinds of logs, with a pipe hawk hammer when drunk (lol) and it is still rock solid. I have used it for days and it has still been razor sharp after serving chopping duty on 2-3 day camping trips. It really changed my opinion of 1095, and that was a good opinion in the first place.

The second reason is the edge angle. 9 times out of 10, the ESEE angle is ground just right, and all their angles are great for cutting. I have to say that Becker definitely has steeper angles on their stuff, as evidenced by shorter bevels, and they require more work to bite as deeply. That is my personal experience though.

Putting it out there again - Who wants a Leatherman Squirt? Its similar to a Micra, but a little smaller. It unfolds into a fantastic pair of scissors. Let me know by post here and email me your address and include your username.

Here is a photo of said Squirt lemepris is offering, top left. ;)

Hmm.. fruit for ponder.

On a side note, I go a couple of weeks without sharpening my kabars When using them hard. I never really have to, I just strop it on a belt to keep it in shake shape and after a couple of weeks, figure it's bettet to sharpen than to risk metal fatigue when I need it for next time.

I must return to sleep now Rem. Still won't be purchasing an esse on this income lol. But it was good to hear the opinions of it from users of both.

One machete/pry bar that's impressed me is the Ontario Sp8. I paid $50 for mine and it's a beast of a chopper. 1/4" thick 10" blade made in the USA.

One downfall of becker is the crappy sheaths and grivory handles. Yes there is now micarta offered and the tweener sheaths are great but once you buy micarta and a better sheath your at the ESEE price point anyways. I have a 11, 9, and 15. No ESEE yet but I had a 4 and it was great. Eyeing another one lately.

I'll offer this up for anyone that can use it. It is a (1)AA 3W LED flashlight, my favorite format by far. They are very handy, and with the AA, batteries are always easy to find. I'll give you a fair warning though, these are good little lights, but once you get hooked on the format, you will end up ordering a Fenix/Quark/Streamlight etc.

I've got (2) of these either to the same person or split up. BOTH CLAIMED, Thanks.

Holy smokes, that thing is a big 'un! I like what you've done to the grips. I have an ESEE 3 now, courtesy of Whetstone, and am loving it. But I gotta say, for big knife tasks, I prefer...well, you know...MACHETES!

My response to that is Kabar Large Heavy Bowie.

Its a similar $50 knife that's better.

What do they have in common? Paul Tsujimoto

Looks like a short sword more than a big knife. Yowzers.

I agree, I love seeing all these big choppers, but I really prefer a machete for "thinning" brush (well, actually I prefer a bushhog). But I also prefer a good hatchet for wood chopping over a big chopping blade. For me, the two tools separate work better than trying to make one tool do two different jobs.

Better? That's a matter of opinion, and not the general consensus to boot! :D

Nope, the design is less likely to fail due to round tang transition and lack of stress risers.

Ontario is tough yes, but the kabar is tougher.

They both share the tooj influence though. He worked for Ontario before heading kabar development.

What makes it better? Seems more comparable to a bk9 than the sp8. The sp8 is made in the us vs Taiwan.

Didn't I just say stress risers?

It has good reason to look comparable to the BK9, it was designed as Kabars competition to the 9 before Beckers Camillus flopped and Beckers became produced by kabar.

After acquiring Becker the LHB was Marked for discontinuation but continued to be a strong seller and so stuck around while only the short Bowie was scrapped.
