PAYPAL and sellers

Well, it was my merchant account with my bank, and it wasn't against their rules. It said you couldn't charge for folks using their cards, it didn't say you couldn't offer a discount for cash or people who came in with bras on their heads, or...
PayPal says you can't offer a discount?

Nothing here. No surcharge, just a discount off my regular prices. :-D

No Surcharges. Under Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express regulations and the laws of several states, including California, merchants may not charge a fee to the buyer for accepting credit card payments (often called a "surcharge"). You agree that you will not impose a surcharge or any other fee for accepting PayPal as payment. This restriction does not prevent you from imposing a handling fee in connection with the sale of goods or services, as long as the handling fee does not operate as a surcharge (in other words, the handling fee for transactions paid through PayPal may not be higher than the handling fee for transactions paid through other payment methods). Nor does this restriction apply to Pound-denominated transactions by sellers residing in the United Kingdom listing items for sale on a UK-based website

As far as card issuers go Amex is the highest per transaction at 2.56% btw... And it looks like the FED is getting ready to push for a 12c cap on all debit card transactions. So still looks like paypal charges more than even AMEX which is the highest of all cards. And it looks like the CC issues and the banks are getting ready to take a hit with a 12 cent cap on debit cards. Expect to see some sort of discounts for using debit cards over your CC if it passes by some shops and retailers. My guess would be it will given the CC regulation followed by the over draft fees regulations...

Either way, it's against Paypal's rules.
If you offer the item for one price, and it is $103 or $101.50 (split fee), there is no issue. If you list it as "$100, or $103/101.50 if using paypal", then yes, it is against the rules. Price with the expectation of being paid by paypal, and either put all or part of the fees in the selling price, depending on how much you want the buyer to cover.

i HATE when people add extra paypal fees!!!!it sucks!!
and alot of the times they ask for more than paypal charges:mad:

BUMP as I feel paypal issues are still here and should be made more TRANSPARENT.

All sellers posts need to be more UP FRONT. knife ABC $5000 obo (price includes paypal, my shipping, insurance, me picking my ass, etc)...

SIMPLE? apparently not. Just make it easy on everyone. Sure sellers have the right to post however the hell they want.. Well maybe thats the problem. Perhaps we need a bit more stringent rules for how to post and advertise a knife.

Yes I know, if seller is blah blah blah, just skip them.. Do we want this forum to continue to degrade (as many senior members have mentioned), or do we want to work things out so we all have a better, quicker, more straight forward experience...

THIS ISNT HARD.. Eff.. carry on...

I am a maker and seller here on the forums and I have never charged for paypal fees. I price my work by materials used, time invested, tools required and skill obtained over time. I have covered the shipping cost as well on 98% of the knives I sell.
The few times that buyers have paid me using the gift option, without my asking, I have very politely and professionally explained to them why I would prefer to pay the fees.
Paypal provides a service that I use, that does not mean that I agree with all of paypal's business principles or decesions. Since I chose to use their service I follow their rules.

It's funny when a Seller wants 3.9% for PayPal and Insurance is extra then- they'll drop the price $50 and still ask for the 3.9% and $1.50 more for insurance.

Just don't Buy from those people.

I'd like to Buy an inexpensive knife from this guy but don't understand what he means:

Shipping & Insurance
- Shipping: Priority shipping adds $8 per box ($5 if knives will fit in a small flat rate box) for CONUS sales. I'll ship internationally with Express Mail at my actual cost.
- Insurance: Add 1.7% of the knife value to the price. All items are shipped fully insured for the purchase price and the buyer assumes the risk of loss during transit. If there is a claim I will turn over any insurance proceeds recovered to the buyer. For international shipments insurance may not be available.

Payment
- Paypal adds 3% (4% for International) to the total

? This part especially- "the buyer assumes the risk of loss during transit. If there is a claim I will turn over any insurance proceeds recovered to the buyer."

So- No Sale For You.

These threads always surprise me with how upset some people appear to be over how somebody wants to sell their knife. I am not going to get too offended by how some guy wants to sell their knife. I will gladly pay 3% or 4% to be able to pay with paypal and not have to get a MO on a knife that is a good deal. By the same token, I've paid for numerous knives with a MO, and don't have a problem with that either. And I'll gladly pay any other crazy fee a seller can come up with if they are a ol' regular on the board with a good reputation and have a good deal on a knife I want.

What offends me are the "I'll take it" guys who can't pay for the knife, or the guys who offer $100 for a knife I'm asking $200 for... :D

The best way to deal with those guys is the same as the best way to deal with paypal terms that upset you - just let it go and move forward...:)

...What offends me are the "I'll take it" guys who can't pay for the knife,...

Can't or won't.
Some people's word is simply no good.
I honestly saw this way less on gun boards where stuff was selling for a couple thousand dollars as opposed to $50-75 here. Of course, the dollar amount is irrelevant. A man is only as good as his word.

To the op, thanks for starting this thread. Bottom line set the selling price to include PP fees, and don't ask for a gift payment. No more awkward sales! :)

It's so much easier to just set a price that includes shipping, insurance and PP fees. One posted price; simple.
