Which is why I replied near immediately after with:I voted for the 501.
I carried the 501 for a few years and think if you thin it down much, you'll not have much knife left. Preston
I posted the above prior to seeing this.
I may not need to thin it further, but once in hand, I will decide for certain.
I agree. The 501 is not in line with my tastes. It looks like a gas station knife or a corporate promotional knife. I hate to say it but cheap is the what comes to mind...definitely sticking to the 301.
Good points. I think the barehead is what sets it (501) apart. I do not believe that is something you can get from the Buck custom shop.
I'll take those covers on a 301 with clip/sheepsfoot/punch please.

I’ve actually wondered if Bucks custom shop could do customizations like that if you called or emailed rather than ordered directly from their site. I have no experience with them, anyone have any idea?
Something that I want the backlock voters to consider: there are people that can't legally carry a locking knife
Yet a lot of people are all over the 501 which can be purchased from the buck custom shop all day every day. How is that unique?

I'm confused by this as well. Maybe people just don't know about the custom shop, where they can get a custom 501 any time they want. The 301 option is far more unique.
If that's the case: Tripple speyAt risk of throwing jet fuel on this discussion, Buck just confirmed with me that you can do a 2 bladed 301 if you so choose, and you can choose from the 3 blade options available for the 2 blades. Not only would this be very unique, but it would DECREASE the cost of the knife.
For those of you unfamiliar, your 3 blade types are:
Spey
Clip
Sheepsfoot

Opposite ends.Excellent news!!!! I'm in for a couple of 301's either way, but the 2-blade option is indeed intriguing.
Is that option with both clip and sheepsfoot on the same end, or would they have to be on opposite ends?
Clip and sheeps foot? Thinner overall footprint?
