Good points. I think the barehead is what sets it (501) apart. I do not believe that is something you can get from the Buck custom shop.

I voted for the 501.
I carried the 501 for a few years and think if you thin it down much, you'll not have much knife left. Preston
Which is why I replied near immediately after with:
I posted the above prior to seeing this.
I may not need to thin it further, but once in hand, I will decide for certain.

Having not handled many of these patterns before, the 303 seems the most pocketable so I'm keeping my vote there. Knives above the 3.5" threshold aren't as alluring to me.

I’ve actually wondered if Bucks custom shop could do customizations like that if you called or emailed rather than ordered directly from their site. I have no experience with them, anyone have any idea?

I believe they closed that part of the custom shop quite a long time ago unfortunately. Another reason the barehead would be wonderful. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.

Something that I want the backlock voters to consider: there are people that can't legally carry a locking knife

This needs more attention. International forum members could be largely excluded from this year's forum knife is we go with a lockback.

Yet a lot of people are all over the 501 which can be purchased from the buck custom shop all day every day. How is that unique?

I'm confused by this as well. Maybe people just don't know about the custom shop, where they can get a custom 501 any time they want. The 301 option is far more unique.

I happen to be well-acquainted with the custom shop. I used to have knives made there, back when it was Pete's Custom Knife Shoppe. They do an awesome job.

Polished elk or polished stag might be an option for everyone to consider. It will be a bit more consistent while keeping it thin. Don't think we have any polished elk or stag in prior BF knife runs.

At risk of throwing jet fuel on this discussion, Buck just confirmed with me that you can do a 2 bladed 301 if you so choose, and you can choose from the 3 blade options available for the 2 blades. Not only would this be very unique, but it would DECREASE the cost of the knife.

For those of you unfamiliar, your 3 blade types are:

Spey
Clip
Sheepsfoot

Edit: The 2 blades would be on opposing ends of the knife.

I would like one of these knives when you all decide what it will be.

Here is a few photos of some 501 offering from the past

They all belong in my pocket JB. lol. Is the top right one in the bottom photo from the custom shop? Is it available anyplace?

If that's the case: Tripple spey :D
On a more serious note I'd go clip and either one or two sheepsfoot blades

Excellent news!!!! I'm in for a couple of 301's either way, but the 2-blade option is indeed intriguing.

Is that option with both clip and sheepsfoot on the same end, or would they have to be on opposite ends?

Clip Sheepsfoot on the 301 would change my vote to the 301. This configuration in polished elk or snakewood would be a winner for me.

I would have to order at least two of those. One to keep and one to gift.

Two blades does make it more attractive to me as I would prefer a slimmer knife and the cost savings are also good.
I feel another poll choice coming as my 501 selection is still in second place.

301 - 2 blade or 3 blade?

Clip and sheeps foot? Thinner overall footprint? Potential monetary savings that could potentially be used to upgrade scale choice?
What’s not to love about that!?
