The 501 is nothing like the thick old 110 and 112 which is what I assume you are referring to when you say larger Buck LB's. The 501 is slim and trim and, in all nickle, seems like something you might like.
It's odd that while I do like the 501, if it is what is chosen, I will only get one with the mindset of my thinning it down further being near a necessity.

I cast my vote for the 501 as it falls in line with my slowly increasing rhetoric in other threads for a lockback. That being said a two blade "Texas Jack" 301 would be just as good in my eyes and pocket. I will, however, play devils advocate about what seems to be the trending 301 cover choice, at least based on comments. Last years forum knife was natural canvas Micarta, and while I love Micarta, think burlap looks fantastic and have carried a Micarta sodbuster for over a year daily, I would hope that for the sake of variety in forum knives we would choose another option. Buck offers elk, stag, giraffe, ironwood, ramshorn and a few different burls just to name a couple of options.

I voted 501. The Squire, originally The Esquire. A great size lock back for the back pocket! A strong drop point blade that opens and closes as smooth as butter.:thumbsup:

The burlap on the sample knife is unique for sure. It almost doesn't look real. I prefer a rear bolster and linen or canvas micarta, but that's just me.

I agree on the burlap micarta. I think it looks great, but I would prefer a more traditional cover this year. I really loved the elk sample that SK showed in the other thread (of the 301s). I think that a bareheaded elk scaled 501 would be a beauty of a knife, and a great addition to the forum knife lineup.

Obviously, I wouldn't kick the burlap out of bed for eating crackers, but I would prefer a natural material.

Elk, Stag, Ramshorn will greatly add to cost and there will inevitably be huge variations in appearance/quality of scales from knife to knife. Some will get stellar versions, plenty will not....just to consider.

Burlap is tough, beautiful and still quite uncommon.

But let's get the pattern sorted first...:D

I'm sure when the equivalent burlap 301 picture is posted it will head back into the lead. Those 501 pictures have just tipped the scales for the moment. :D

Seems a lot of people are enthralled with burlap micarta. Not my style on a traditional knife, so I'm going to toss this out to see if there is any hope...
Buckeye burl

Buckeye burl
I'd definetly prefer it over horn

Buckeye burl is on my list so yes.

Recent 301/303 springs are not terribly strong by the way. Good for some, not others. Just mentioning it (to stear y'all to the 501 of course)

If the 501 was chosen, I like the barehead design better than having the back bolster. For handle materials, I always prefer natural (wood, stag, horn, pearl, bone), but I admit that the picture of that burlap is attractive also.

After keeping up with the entire forum knife 2018 thread I don’t get the 501 love fest going on. I will admit I’m a stockman guy but the 501 is a fine knife. However, in that thread there was much grumbling about both buck and GEC not offering unique enough options. Yet a lot of people are all over the 501 which can be purchased from the buck custom shop all day every day. How is that unique? The 301 or 303 is not currently available in the custom shop and may never be, so this knife would be truly unique. pattern preferences aside, I think the uniqueness factor makes the 301/303 the clear winner. Not to mention the pattern imo is far more traditional than the 501. Just something to think about...
