I've been watching intently both the 2018 Traditional Forum Knife thread and this Polling thread and noticed that skblades skblades has not touched on the "blade options" topic at all for the 301/303 (eg. 2 blades vs. 3 or swapping out the spey for a more popular blade, etc.). I'm guessing it is either not going to be an option from Buck or is going to be a very pricey option to modify the blade setup... any thoughts or insight SK? Might sway people's vote depending on what the possibilities are.
He'y recently written that 2 blades are an option with choice between spey/sheepsfoot/clip ;) it's somewhere in this thread

You are correct. I have touched on bits of it, for example, that 2 blades are an option for the 301 if we want. Those 2 blades come come from the 3 blades available. To change to different blades, we would have to ask, and incur some cost for that. I'd advise that the choice be limited to the 3 available to save cost on blade steel and handle material, while also keeping overall cost lower.

Sorry if this was answered already, can someone tell me if a punch is an option for the second blade on the 301?

I'd be happier with the 3 blades option, as someone has mentioned the clip/sheepsfoot has already been done. In any case I'd prefer a stockman.

Hi Joe,
That was a Buck limited edition knife made a while ago and was a catalog item, only 250 made. It's a Wild Bill Cody design, these show up on the auction sites for sale from time to time.

Thanks, it's very special.

For a three blade, would clip/sheepsfoot/pen be an option? I imagine the retooling for a punch will be prohibitively expensive:(.

Thanks SK! Just wanted to be sure since some people may be hedging on whether or not a 2 blade is a possibility which I'm sure would be handled through another poll. Other questions have been if a punch or cap lifter would be an option at an up-charge, any idea on those? Just thinking out loud here since we are in proposal and polling phase... aka Phase 5.0 per @meako

Hey, it can't hurt to ask what the actual cost would be to having a punch replace a blade, but I'm not hopeful it will be budget friendly.

It was worth a shot, thanks for checking in to it .

I voted for the 301 only because the 302 wasn't an option. The 302 is the perfect pocket knife as it is so thin it disappears in the pocket, and yet has a blade long enough to matter.

I had not considered the legality of our international members carrying or owning lockback knives. It would never be my intention to do something intentionally that would be exclusionary to those fine folks, and this would in effect sway my vote.

If Buck is, in fact, the chosen knife, a two blade 301 would be an excellent choice. The slim profile, reduction in cost and fact it is unique, not mass produced or readily available makes it a great candidate for the forum knife. Equal and opposite end are both lovely designs.

SK, thanks for all your work on this. It is greatly appreciated.

Though I don't have the vote, I tend to agree that the international members should not be excluded. We'll see how this shakes out. Out of curiosity, do we know exactly how many would be excluded?

At risk of throwing jet fuel on this discussion, Buck just confirmed with me that you can do a 2 bladed 301 if you so choose, and you can choose from the 3 blade options available for the 2 blades. Not only would this be very unique, but it would DECREASE the cost of the knife.

For those of you unfamiliar, your 3 blade types are:

Spey
Clip
Sheepsfoot

Edit: The 2 blades would be on opposing ends of the knife.

Honestly, this makes the 301 infinitely more attractive to me. If we can get a knife with a clip and a sheepfoot, without any of the proud tips that have been mentioned earlier, and delete the spey blade, this would be a knife I would be more enthusiastic about owning.

I am not a micarta fan on my more traditional slip joints, thought I absolutely love it on my fixed blades, and burlap has historically done nothing for me. This picture, however, is pretty and though I might do so begrudgingly, I will still get behind a knife such as this, if it is indeed the popular choice.

I will remind everyone though, as others have done, we had micarta last year, I would love to see us explore some other cover variations.

I changed my vote to the 301. I don't want a knife that I got by excluding other members and I can't imagine that anybody else does either.

I also agree with everything else you said.

This looks wonderful - I'd definitely be in for something like this setup, irrespective of the handle material (especially with upgrade steel/FFG).

@skblades ~ are there any gaps between the backsprings and liners? I have a 309 in Sambar stag that has a hidden center pin like that and the knife has huge gaps between the liners and backsprings.

I think when they peened the ends,, it spread the springs. On my 309, the center pin is just a little spud that moves within the knife, so there's not any pressure holding the layers together... hopefully that makes sense! I've been meaning to send my 309 in to see if they can correct it because those huge gaps really bug me. Otherwise, that's pretty much a dream knife for me, I like it so much I did my own 303 in the style a while back, and have been thinking about one of those BCCI BG42 301s to do the same thing on... Changing my vote to a 301 :D
