That's a beauty, but did it come from the factory like that?

Thank you for the heads up, but near $150 for S30V is a little beyond my preferences. I would prefer CPM154 for a bit less, or M390 for slightly more.

Both of those alloys have attributes that I prefer over S30V.
Bill, it's $112 with S30V, or $99 with 420, both with cherry wood scales. I hadn't considered the Custom Shop until now, but the NS bolsters and cherry together with that blade tugs at my wallet.

I've used Buck's 420HC and think it's OK but not great. I have no experience with S30V. May I ask what's not to like about it?

I also opted for Buckeye burl.

As for S30V, I found that it holds a stubborn burr, while preferring Diamond or SiC for sharpening, otherwise, it tends to not cut the carbides while removing the material around them. This has the effect of leaving a toothy edge until the support threshold is overcome, then the carbides are torn out.

As far as a properly sharpened S30V, it will take less keen of an edge than CPM154 or 154cm, it will also hold its peak keenness less than both of the 154s, but hold a working edge longer than both.

That being said, if I were to rank them in toughness (all things being equal):
1) CPM154
2) 154cm/S30V tied with the only help to S30V being from the CPM manufacturing process. Otherwise it would be less than the ingot based 154cm.

CPM154 and 154CM both sharpen easier than S30V, don't need diamonds, do not hold a stubborn burr, and are nearly equal in stain resistance.

I prefer an easier sharpening tool, unless I am getting significantly more edge retention (M390/CTS204P/20CV or higher). I often have a DMT Diafold within arms reach, so a quick touch up is not an issue for me.
