As others have pointed out, a Large Stockman (or Small for that matter) of all stainless construction with upgraded blade steel-say 154 is near impossible to find. It's all brass/carbon or CASE ss/brass, only by commissioning a Custom maker can you get what the Buck Stockman offers, and it will cost the earth.

I don't think it boils down to single-blade enthusiasts will opt for the lock back either. I like both single and multi blade knives and I like lock backs that are not too big and not heavy in the pocket-and brass-free whenever possible. The larger Buck LBs don't attract me at all.

My votes and preferences will only be for the Buck Stockman choices, Large or Small. Their LBs have no appeal, for me at least.

The 2 Stockman choices have at the time of writing, just over 50% of the vote already.

This poll/thread makes me curious. Which are there more of amongst us, between:

Stockman guys that are OK with a single blade lockback (a BF Buck for this purpose)

Or

Single blade guys that are OK with a multi blade stockman.

I’m quite partial to single blades, even more so lockbacks. That said, I think we should go with whatever pattern the majority of people would be most “OK” with, since there is no way to please us all (hence my thought process above)
I'm basically a single blade guy but am behind a Buck BF knife however it turns out.

The 501 is nothing like the thick old 110 and 112 which is what I assume you are referring to when you say larger Buck LB's. The 501 is slim and trim and, in all nickle, seems like something you might like.

There is a free radical that your calculation hasnt calculated for..
Votes don't equal purchase decision.
eg I voted 501 but will happily accept the 301 .
Its early days with scales yet to be decided.
Good to have someone with an eye on the numbers though. Keep up the good work.:thumbsup:

Well put.

I really liked the 532, and then I looked up prices...so I’m changing my vote. Every single version I looked at was way over the ~$100 budget of the past. Can these be made at more modest prices, or am I only seeing the very fancy versions?

As a longtime Buck knife user and collector I’m just happy to see Buck Knives in the running to be THE BF Traditional Knife of 2018. I’ve got plenty of Buck LBs and Buck Stockman knives, so I’ll buy whichever one we choose. OH

As of me typing this, it appears to be a dead heat between the stockman(110 votes) and lockback(112 votes). Mind you, I'm adding all the various lockbacks together and combined the two stockman options. I don't know if some votes will change as certain patterns pull ahead, but these are the numbers as they stand now.

That is an interesting way to crunch the numbers. In years past, I wonder how the math would have looked if the votes for 1095 were weighed against the aggregate of the SS options presented? IIRC there were several SS options some years and they were not added up against the carbon in the polls, thereby diluting the SS votes.

Okay, I got some estimate pricing on the knives that I mentioned earlier in this thread. Buck also made a sample of the 501, that I need to get photos of, but it sounds amazing.

Both the 501 and the 301 will have similar pricing at the specs of CPM-154, Burlap Micarta and the nice collectors box I showed in the other thread. We are looking at $80 +/- 5%, and then you'll want to add shipping to that. I am very pleasantly surprised by this pricing! At that price, my costs will be covered, so it's pretty sweet if you ask me! Remember this is tentative pricing, so don't hold me over the coals. But it will be very close to this if these specs were chosen.

This give us some leeway to play with in terms of materials. I don't have the numbers, but more expensive options such as elk, or jigged bone, or snakewood would all be options and possibly still keep the knife under or around $100. I can get more pricing ideas later in the process.

I'll get even better photos later. Feast those eyes....

(501, Burlap Micarta, Nickel Silver)

Well, that's a dilly of a pickle. I was certain I was favoring the 301, but this single bolster 501 is very tempting.

If we're at ~$80 now, I wonder what else we could add to keep it ~$100. I wonder what copper hardware would cost...
