Got to go with number 1. If you've ever had your hand slip when sticking something, and your grip slips and old finger gets a good slice, the guard is worth its weight in gold. # 2 looks pretty, but functionality is the cornerstone of a true Busse. # 2 reminds me too much of a kitchen knife.

You, and the other guy who said something to the effect, " no one buys a Busse because it's practical.." should get together for a drink. Which Busse do you use now? Next thing you'll be saying is it should be really thick too. In SAR work sometimes we are in the field for days looking for a victim vs a survivor; which puts us into survivor mode, which means camp kitchen tasks, cutting firewood; and then rope, crash debris or what have you at the site. I do not believe this particular knife needs to scream Busse, every SAR person out there will recognize it as such in less than a year, that I can assure you.

# 2 is the one SAR guys are trying to get IMO. Some traits are nice on each though.

J85909266, We were asking for something other than the usualy because we do mostly wood work. First responders like EMTs, firefighters and police cut seatbelts and all that stuff. Volunteer SAR (in the Pacific Northwest at least) are predominantly used for backcountry searches. We need tools to set up a camp but FAST for hunkering down during a storm or for stabilizing or warming up our customers. We need to be able to widdle pitchwood, split, pry (small stuff only... we carry a heavy blade for big stuff), cut cord and so on. It's pretty important that we have a knife that allows us to get close to the blade. A full choil does that but is unnecessary and unwarranted on a blade of this size. A small choil moves the grip back without any benefit apart from appearance. We don't care about appearance so much.

The last sentence is what I'm laying claim to, even though all of the above is what I've been pointing out too. Here in New England we have the same needs.

Thanks for the explanation, Dunner. I was unaware of that aspect of SAR. The second design makes a lot more sense, now.

At this point, to suggest number 1 seems selfish to me, as it is more what I want as a civilian, rather than what the knife is actually intended for, so I stand by that both should be released, as number one will obviously sell more, where number 2 is more sensible for the intended purpose.

Thanks for being patient with me, you learn something everyday.

The bickering coming up is getting to be a bit much, let me remind you guys to be respectful of each others opinions. As I had said before, I think Jerry should put greater weight one the opinions of the people who are actively involved in SAR operations and training. Anyone else ought to be mindful of their experiences and how they may just know more about what they need in the field. I appreciate that Jerry was trying to get a broad range of ideas, but maybe the project would be bettered served by a private poll of those in the SAR community if they are going to get what they need. I am not second guessing his methods, but I am sure that he did not foresee some of the heat that is rising from this thread. So what if he decides to make the#2 the SAR blade as it looks like more in the SAR community like it's attributes. Don't think for one minute he doesn't recgnize the draw #1 has had. Heck he just got enough feedback to know that both design would be well received. Looks like a win win for Busse to me. :D

LOL, yeah... I imagine we'll see 'em both eventually. :) The SAR guys oughta get what they want first though. :D:thumbup:

A Bark River in A2 may out live you.;)

.

My loins are made of A2 :D

Actually I am starting to take a liking to some of the Bark River models. A few designs remind me of a beefy Cultelli or BAIII's of some sort.. pretty cool !
I confused Bark River with another company..oops! .BR is good stuff...
LOL I'm actually thinking about picking one up now. I like the orange g10 Bravo 1 model... yea, can't go wrong with A2

I voted really early in this poll, and in the first ten votes I think number 2 was winning. I want number 2 to win more now then when I voted for it and I want the HOGmuk to be made in order to have a new era in Busse lore, I'm spending my retirement (not really) to get old Busse's but I'm excited to get many new Busse's as they're vital, fresh, and novel including the MUK's and the SAR's... YMMV

Go buy a Bark River...or a kitchen knife. I've never seen a more un-Busse Busse design.

I was gonna post a bunch of the older designs from badmojo showing the variety of what busse has produced in the past, and how it completely transcends any specific "style" of design. but instead, this one image (from a long time ago):

I've used knives like that that don't have a choil, some of them are stable, like all of my kitchen knives (though the larger chefs knives would be very torquey during wood work). and some of them are not, like the rat shaker (which i cut my index finger on several times while my hands were greased up with chicken fat).

I prefer number two just because choils are my mortal enemy. as long as the blade is stable in the hand, meaning it doesn't try to twist itself in one direction or the other when your cutting through reletively low binding medium *wood, as apposed to hard plastic*, i think that number two will be more versatile.

[edit] I've decided to not play a part in compairsons... after rereading my own comments, i realized that i'd rather like to see this stay on a usefullness/what do we want jerry to produce type line[/edit]

i just hate choils.... hate 'em! :barf::barf::barf:

so much new stuff comin around these days :D:thumbup:

looking at them, i think this has a better "psuedo-gaurd" then the hog muk -

though they are different applications. the nessmuk design in general was kinda meant to be used in a more controlled fashion, versatile, but also something you had to pay attention to while using. at least, thats my take on it.

the second design has a much better securererer looking index finger section geometry.

I would not complain about number one being made without the choil (just a straight shot from edge to gaurd). no complaints at all :)

I think #2 would be plenty secure, however for a bit more security, maybe a few finger grooves could be added to the handle? That should be enough to keep your hand from sliding without having to add a guard/small choil like on #1. Or you could even add some notches (similar to the thumb notches on the larger SARsquatch) on the bottom part of the handle leading up to the edge on #2.

Perfect interpretation Jaxx & DWRW . On thumb ramps, I could go with no ramp since there seems to be such varied opinions on location size and as mentioned... ramp up or ramp down. I do think having a ridge at the end of the handle ramping down to the spine like it's big brother would be a nice way to tie the lineage of these two knives together :). Either way, I'm just excited about whichever knife shows up!
