I was thinking that too. Any chance a sheathmaker will get one of the 4.1s for a template? Leather would be great!

Once I get mine, I'll check and see what sheaths might fit it. I have quite a few leather sheaths from other similar knives. One of my favorites is the Dakota sheath Reid of Sharpshooter makes which fits several different models of knives. They have different sizes also.

Just ordered two -4.1's in M-390, one for me and one for the wife! Anxiously waiting for my -5.1 to show up hopefully today or tomorrow at the latest..

Thanks to Guy for the awesome preorder! The options for additional scales is a nice touch. I, too, would love to see some good leather for any of these knives..

Ah, yes! I've seen those in Virtuovices's videos. The "forest sheath" form KSF is similar.

Just ordered a 4.1 in M-390, psyched! I like the leather sheath idea... I prefer leather sheaths, esp. for a stainless knife.

Question for you Guy - I'm interested in getting the Orange handles, and I'm curious as to why you switched from G-10 to Tero Tuf?

I've not personally handled Tero Tuf, and I'm wondering how different it is to G-10, in terms of feel and durability.

Guy, I'd also be interested in some good leather sheaths.

While we are on the topic, I ordered a couple of orange/M390's with black kydex.

Since the orange handles will make it a "don't loose me if you set me down" knife, any possibility of getting orange kydex to match the handles (so everything is easy to spot)?

Thanks for letting us bend your ear and listening to input from your customers...a sign of a good up and coming company with a bright future ahead.

Looking forward to receiving them. Thanks in advance.

After months of reading BladeForums, I'm finally posting.

Just ordered one in 3V and black micarta, with an OD sheath. This will actually be my first ever fixed blade, and first non-stainless knife. Can't wait!

Awesome, good for you! Welcome to the machine! ;)

Can someone please explain the differences between the 2 steels?
3V is not stainless, but it has a superb impact toughness. Your choice if you want to do a lot of chopping with it.

M390/ELMAX are stainless and will be your choice, if you want the maximum sharpness that lasts for a very long time.
I've kept some quotes from Ankerson, regarding M390 (and ELMAX) - I wouldn't choose any other stainless steels:
  • Both ELMAX and M390 were developed for the Plastics industry were they needed to be be very corrosive resistant due to the highly corrosive environment and chemicals. Both steels are 3rd Generation PM technology and very fine grained, also very clean (Pure).
  • M390 is a High Carbide steel and is pretty complicated in it's forming of the carbides and the HT and tempering process so a one needs a good HT that really knows what they are doing.
  • ELMAX is also a High Carbide steel, slightly less than M390 and less complicated to HT and Temper.
  • Both ELMAX and M390 will take a frightening sharp edge and hold it for a very long time with the edge going to M390 for longer edge retention. Both steels are very strong when they are Ht correctly.
  • Hardness should be around 60 HRC for most production blades we will see for both steels.
  • In customs with a good HT both can be hardened to 62 HRC by a good HT who has a 4 bar or better furnace and understands these steels and the tempering process. M390 is very complicated to HT and temper, the tempering process can get very involved and difficult.
  • As long as the heat treater doesn't cripple it with a sub standard HT and tempering process and freezes it they can get it to 61-62 HRC were it really needs to be. If they can do that it's really an amazing steel that will offer exceptional performance well beyond what some would believe. M390 can be a very tough and strong steel that can hold an edge for a very long time at proper hardness.
  • As was outlined in your post it's not cheap to do that, getting high performance with premium steels never is.

Buy one of each is actually not a bad advice... I think Guy has chosen the best steels in each category (chopper/slicer).

I've not personally handled Tero Tuf, and I'm wondering how different it is to G-10, in terms of feel and durability.

I began looking into Terotuf after once and for all deciding that I hate G-10 on a user knife. The surface of Terotuf will be more similar in feel to canvas micarta, with a nice grippy media blasted finish. It won't be quite as bright orange as the G-10 but it will still be plenty visible and you won't mistake it for anything but orange.

I am looking into a few people for leather sheaths. Actually just ready to send a sheath to Sagewood Gear this coming week, to see what they can come up with. I am also looking into another guy, that a friend in the industry suggested, for more of a pouch style leather sheath.

As far as carrying more kydex colors. I try to offer 3 good kydex options to offer with my knives. I might look into expanding that down the road but for now 3 sheath options is plenty complicated for me, until I perhaps get some help hired and my focus isn't so fragmented throughout the day. lol Seriously, two days and almost 200 preorders already.

For the time being, I feel more than confident telling you that Kiah will be able to easily handle any special sheath requests, when these knives are finished. You can find him as a service provider and moderator here or his email is kiah@kiahdex.com

YOUR KILLING ME GUY ,first the GSO-10 preorder, got one of those. Now the GSO-4.1. Just preordered 2 M-390 4.1s.Hope to have the funds to order a 3V 4.1 by the 18th. Any update on the GSO-7 or is it still the GSO-6? Might wait and order one of those in 3V.Especially if you are going to have some kind of preorder special on it.

Actually my wife is going to kill me if she finds out I have been buying knives instead of selling some.

Yeah, I've actually decided that I will try to do a preorder special each time a new design rolls out. I do need to quit the "just above cost" and focus on some growth but I can still give people a very friendly discount on a preorder. The GSO-7/7(GSO-6) should be moving into production in January, after this GSO-4.1 thing is wrapped up. I also have a few other surprises that I'm working on. Don't ask, or they won't be surprises. ;)

Guy, you've done an outstanding job bringing us this knife in 2 great steels, 4 choices for handle material and 3 colors for the sheaths. These ought to be enough options for everyone. All at an amazing price. Thank you!

Yes GUY,THANKYOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Any chance you will run out of M390?

No, not on this run. Unless this preorder promotion would get REALLY crazy. I have two sheets available to me that are roughly the size of a sheet of drywall. lol

Thank you for taking the time to reply Guy and for the information.

I can completely understand the desire to keep options simple for your own sanity. I was just thinking orange scales/orange kydex would make for the ultimate high-visibility package.

Your development of a couple of leather options has me considering ordering one or two additional sans sheaths, and ordering your leather sheaths once they are finalized (the credit card cycles before the order closing date....a way to spread the pain out a bit ;) )

Question. In light of the post above, does Peters have experience in HT & tempering M390? It sounds like it is much more critical than Elmax.

200 orders in 2 days is awesome! It speaks a lot to the quality and value you are offering. Really excited to get my hands on the new GSO4.1. Looks like its going to be a very good Christmas...

Keep up the good work and innovation. Looking forward to seeing what else you have on the horizon.

I would say so. They worked with Bohler-Uddeholm to develop the heat treat protocols. ;) They know how to get the most of of these steels. You are in good hands Man, trust me.
