I received mine.

Very brief impressions - and pics!

Out of the box, the first thing I noticed is that the quality, fit & finish is great... except one little detail - already mentioned by some - namely the machining marks on the spine. So I immediately started some cosmetic work. At first I was afraid that it would not fit with the rugged general appearance of the knife, but it gave it a bit of elegance without compromising the spirit, I think.

I didn't really use it yet apart from light cutting, but my first impression is that the balance and ergonomics are pretty much perfect for the size.

If i did , I'm really sorry but I'm keeping it:) the only thing I am not liking, is how high the knife rides with this style of clip. I'll probably start making a drop clip out of leather.

Fine. Be that way. Then I'm keeping yours when it gets here. :D

Re: the high ride. Have you tried horizontal carry or using the belt slots? I'm curious how it rides in either of those positions.

Machining marks dont bother me one bit. I received my 4.1 with camo handles and od sheath today. Came with a finer sharper edge than anything Ive got for awhile. Edge was spyderco sharp. great deal for 150 or 200. makes me anxious for my 5.1 in 3v

Got mine today I am thoroughly impressed with this knife. Excellent F&F, nice heft, great balance, perfect grinds and edge is as good as it gets, well done Guy.

I can't get my review to upload on BF right now, but here is another pic for those still waiting:

One thing though, I need this to work with a firesteel and just by feeling the spine corners, I'm not thinking this is going to happen as they are quite rounded. Any suggestion for this Guy? Thanks! Beautiful knife and so glad I was able to be part of this pre-order!

Hey There,
Like Schmittie said, just take a sharpening stone to a section of spine to sharpen the corners if you are wanting to use a firesteel. I try to give you a nice strong foundation, that works best for everyone but I strongly encourage you to make it "yours" by modifying the knife to suit your particular needs.

Alright, been fiddling my 4.1 for the last few hours, figure I'll keep both M390s for a knife this size.
I'm sure this has been brought up before, but Guy if you're reading this, are there any plans to sell scale and sheath sets in the near future?

Yep, sure am. In the next few weeks you should begin seeing optional handle scales. Just need some time to recover from getting all of these out. lol We are finally up to date on all GSO-4.1 orders. If you are looking for extra sheaths, you can actually order any color you like directly from Kiah.

I am no longer waiting. :D

Very happy with knives.

The "Spanish Notch" on mine, as delivered, is ideal for using the ferro rods that I carry.

What was the Spanish Notch? I have not heard of this. The only reason I brought up the spine was because I was led to believe it would be sharp enough upon receipt. Not knowing there were other options because I use my knife with my ferro rods and don't need/want to carry extra strikers.

What was the Spanish Notch?

Look at the edge just before the blade enters the handle. See the half circle notch? On mine, the edges are quite sharp and throw sparks just fine. Of course, if you use a ferro rod with a larger diameter than the notch, you need another solution.

Just received today. Perfect size although I may make some liners for a little extra roundness to the handle. It fits the sheath nice and snug too (From Ray at Wild Boar Blades). I'll be using it tomorrow. :D

Also known as a "choil".

I guess it was a "choil" at one time. Today, "choil" is usually taken to be a larger, unsharpened area that allows the user to "choke up" on the knife by placing the forefinger in the "choil."

Also a source of endless argument among Busse aficionados (To choil or not to choil?).

It's a source of discussion among ALL knife users, but the word still has the same definition it has always had - an indentation at the base of the cutting edge. Choils are featured on a majority of pocket knives as well as many fixed blades. By its very nature, a choil is unsharpened, but only when it is large enough to accommodate a finger (very rare) can it be used to "choke up". Other knives feature a substantial ricasso for choking up, and some even have a finger groove milled into the ricasso. The GSO-10 forward groove is mostly in the ricasso rather than the blade, so the choil is a little off-center.

Here is an Entrek Companion (pic from the website), comparable to the GSO-4.1:

Guy's choil on the GSO-4.1 is remarkable for it symmetry and enhances the knife both aesthetically and functionally (imho)

Guy,
Can you do a video of the same knife tip test using an M-390 variant of the GSO-4.1 as you did with the 3V? I am not very familiar with M-390. I bought M-390 with the intention of using it for hunting but if it's my primary fixed blade, I have to know what I can/cannot do with it.

I love the knife by the way. It exceeded my expectations, but then again I actually like the tool marks on the spine. Now I just need my 7/7 to ship and for you to put out a folder.
