Anyone have much experience with elmax?

A friend of mine gifted me his custom elmax bowie and I use it lots in the kitchen.
I don't misuse it but I also certainly don't look after it like other knives. And i've noticed, after I wash it and leave it to dry with water on it (tap water), it starts to have surface rust. Left me very confused, i thought elmax would do much better.

That said, for whatever reason, steel rusts so easy here. I dont think i've had any steel not rust so far for me. And I do not live anywhere near a beach, nor do I misuse knives.

Anyway, i hate rust. I really hate it. And I know most people say not to worry and it wont cause issues, but i just hate it. This is part of my enthusiam for magnacut. From what i've heard...surely that will finally solve my problem 😅
I really like elmax but it will spot rust in my experience a bit more stainless than cru wear

Use it and enjoy it!

So toilet tank cracked for no reason..I rush home from work then get a replacement....start taking out the old and installing the new toilet

3/4 the way done the youngest calls and has a flat tire... so I finished the toilet....... go fix the flat with a spare (didn't have a jack stand which I needed and forgot my electric impact..... then go back with such items and the impact battery is dead...... )

These stupid things are such a common occurrence I understand why I drink so much and don't have more CPKs

I could punch a nun in the face........

Well I am glad there are nun around!

isnt elmax supposed to be stainless?

Despite the very high chrome levels, Elmax is prone to rust.

That is the amazing thing about Magnacut, it keeps all of that chrome in solution rather than tied up in carbide. Amazing steel design.

Elmax can be an excellent steel though.

I fear new things…Any real users have first hand experience using Magnacut? Sometimes “professional reviewers” are so excited about being the first to evaluate the new I am skeptical of their objectivity (I would count you as a real user, Nathan),

Im wondering if there is a formula that answers the age old question of…How many times must you buy and sell the same knife ( Model) before you decide if it is or is not for you?
I had to go 3 rounds with the Umnumzaan before I decided it was a keeper. Small Sebenzas took I think 6 to prove it wasnt my knife. Both XM-18 and Large Inkosi were a 1 and done move along. The FK2 was an odd one in that I moved it and probable wont buy another as it was the first knife that was just “Too Nice for me”. The Mnandi took a second for me to fall in love and the Eklipse is hanging on the first attempt and I cant even make a decision one way or another!
I got to wondering about this as my UF2 hasn’t even reached its new owner yet and I have already set a reminder for tomorrows sale to try and score another and I already know it will be the same exact size of my last one that was just too big….

You need a DEK.

I do think just being on Bladeforums contributes to the flipper mentality. There’s always a newest greatest thing. In reality, it can take a while before you really know a knife and I bet if some users here slowed down and spent a year or two with their knives there’d be way less turnover.

I guess I'm weird. If I think that I might want to sell a knife, I don't even buy it. But I only live a few miles from The House of Blades, so maybe I'm spoiled.

"Definitely the DEK 1. No, the DEK 2. Yeah, but I need a chopper. Or an Umnumzaan. No...definitely an HDFK...or FK2...that's the ticket."

(I feel your pain brother.)

The two best times to buy CPK's are when pre-orders are open or Friday sales on current production knives. Availability goes way down and prices go up once they go out of production. It is a safe bet to buy another UF2 now to hold until you get a DEK2 down the road and confirm you like that model better. The UF2 will hold or increase in value because it will be out of production by then. It is also nice to have one CPK available to trade for another CPK you are looking for vs. competing with a straight WTB ad like many other new folks.

Sometimes first impressions lead to emotional buy/sell decisions that haunt us later. One truism for me with CPK's is that I grow to recognize and appreciate the many subtle design features they have over time and use. I made the mistake of selling my first DEK1 shortly after receiving it a couple years ago because it just didn't jive with hand in the same way as the FK2 handle that I was so familiar with. I regretted that decision over time. Once I finally got another DEK1, I realized how much that model has to offer that I neglected to see on my first impression before the quick sale. Now it is one of my favorites. Live and learn (and learn again...:))
