The term also encompasses workers who stick to the hours and responsibilities outlined in their contracts. As in, they refuse to be pressured into working after hours, or taking on additional responsibilities, without being compensated for the extra time/roles.

The term everyone should be using is work to rule (and this is not a new concept whatsoever - ask unions). The current term used is used as a means to basically shame people into providing free labour. Quiet quitting isn't "not doing your job" - it's doing your job according to your contract. There is a major issue of scope creep when it comes to workplace responsibilities. People who signed up for one role find themselves doing two or three.

Lets put it this way: If a buyer ordered 10,000 blanks of steel then suddenly tells the vendor to provide 12,000 without extra compensation, no one would scoff at the idea of the vendor telling the buyer to fuck off but, for some reason, this is a huge deal when employees do it.

Employment is a business transaction - that's all it is. You do X for Y dollars.
