Random Thought Thread

Anyone have any tattoos? This was my first, I was 30 years old when I got it. The artist is Tom Renshaw and it took him 30 hours to complete. On my very first appointment I sat for 8 hours straight and he got the face completed. Tom was voted best tattoo artist in the world two years in a row and this tattoo has won first place at multiple competitions. At 51 years of age I have collected over 150 hours of Tom's work which has resulted in 9 different tattoos and this weekend I will be heading to Detroit once again to make it an even 10, when I get a portrait of one of my dogs.

OK, I've been a little busy with life stuff, so gimme some slack on 3 random posts at once...

1) What's this about HDFK's for sale in a few weeks? Truth or rumor?

2) A wise man quoted a study on happiness. Something to the effect of...you get more lift from removing a negative from your life than adding a positive (or thing). Maybe blasphemy to knife addicts, but I just experienced a bit of this truth.

3) I think I found betzner betzner a nice set of steak knives yesterday. Will have to go find the pic again.

Yeah we're going to have a little sprint run of about 25 HDFK finish heat treat in a couple days and we'll post out in the main area in a couple weeks once we have them finished out. There are some Medium Chopper prototypes in that heat lot as well that I plan to finish next week for a small CPK forum sale here.

I have about 100 HDFK finishing off the Mori now which will yield more HDFK in a couple months.

We have the last of the EDC preorder on the Romi now which will yield the last of that pre-order here in a couple months too.

^Haha! I check that site daily and also saw the steak knives, lol. And when I saw them, I had exactly the same thought as you, Mark!

Great update news

UPDATE:

Material was ordered in January. We've having a run of 3V rolled to our specification, it is scheduled to arrive on March 6th. We will being processing the material in about a month and will start the first batch into heat treat probably around the middle of May. I expect the first of these to start to ship in early summer and we will work through the order steadily once we start the build, in the order the orders were received.

Getting some Behemoth and MCs ready for Blade '18 is a must!

RE: #2. A lot of truth there. Many years ago I would occasionally catch a little bit of a radio psychologist's afternoon show. (I was too lazy to change the station.) The caller, in a whiny voice complained about a family member who caused him mega-grief. The psychologist told him to get this person out of his life. In an even more whiny voice the caller said, "but this is a family member!" The psychologist repeated that the caller need this person out of his life. About this time I arrived at my destination and didn't hear the rest, but I agreed 100% with the psychologist. I have, or I should say had some real Adam Henries in my family. During my last contact with them I told them to lose my phone number and email address. I didn't want to ever hear from them again. One of the best decisions I ever made.

I just remembered the psychologist's name. Toni Grant.

That’s after seeing the exchange this am.

Although having some fun in here on that subject, it doesn't bother me as much as it may bother some or perhaps mostly the Maker. Certainly some self interest and subjectiveness is always mixed in with anyone's POV but even if I was being purely objective based on what else is readily available for sale (IMHO) not even in the same mold as Nathan's Shivs / UFs, I've come to the conclusion that those now retired patterns are worth at least by a factor of 2 x as compared to their original prices and even more if a rarer and more collectible iteration with fancy-schmancy handles. JMHO.

Sure, I can see wood, one-offs etc being a solid double the original asking price in particular after they have changed hands a couple times.

3-4 x original price? No. IMO a Shiv isn’t a ~$1000 knife and I doubt there are many buyers, if any in that range.

Although if I tried to make one on my own, I'd have well over $25K in expenditures and other overheads (both fixed and variable types) and at the end of it all I'd probably end up with a monstrosity: 2 handles at each end and a pizza dough roller for its blade ;)
