Random Thought Thread

A well-executed, traditional lager is a very under-appreciated brew in this day and age.

Ain't it the truth.

Fortunately, Brevard Brewing in town makes a nice Dunkel, Pilsner, and traditional "Lager" for those times when I'm IPA'd out. (Also a nice Red Ale.)

He sells a multi-pack in the local supermarket which contains five different brews...so it's easy to have a bit of variety.

Flat Earthers are also pure speculation, I've never met one personally, only heard rumors they exist. All flat earth talk, is only about how ridiculous flat earthers are... When I thought I met one, it turns out this person just thought it was funny to try to convince people on the internet the earth is flat... didn't personally believe it one bit.

I usually think of them like I do "Sovereign CItizens". They're just "traveling through".

(I'm sure they're all very nice folks, but I don't want to go drinking with them...well...lemme think on that...)

Or crypto bros. Listening to them go on about block chains and mining after having a few beers is always interesting...

Gravity draws the atmosphere towards the earth and the density/pressure as a function of elevation is quite well predicted.

I'm involved in a study of the atmosphere of comets which have amazing behavior. Some of them pass near our sun every 6 years or so and spend most of their time in deep freeze, then as they slingshot past the sun they warm up and produce a huge diffuse atmosphere (e.g. spread over a million km) with lots of interesting chemistry going on. We can actually map the components spatially and get a lot of insight.
so let's have a thought experiment.
if we had a pressurized container and created a mechanism to separate it into two chambers, one higher than the other, and then removed the separation, the gasses would reach an equal pressure distributed evenly inside the entire container.

what if the container were oriented with the high pressure on top and the low pressure on the bottom, before the divider was removed? what would happen is the container would reach equal pressure distributed throughout the container.

what if the low pressure was on top and the division was removed? would it reach equilibrium?
tinfoil hat timmy tinfoil hat timmy - did you know that you can download high resolution (1000dpi) scans of the original (mostly Hasselblad) shots from the moon landing ? http://apolloarchive.com/apollo_gallery.html

Cool to browse, if you believe them or not.

Then again, maybe the Moon is flat ?
ok. if the moon is tidally locked with the earth the last photo above would be impossible because the moon would always be facing the earth and it wouldnt rise or set. do you understand why?

NASA is faking space

One of the biggest knocks against flat Earth theory is the fact that the people who produce real results all base their results on math that assumes a spherical Earth. GPS, satellite communications, airplanes, long distance marksmanship, etc. Even nugs like me use it and get real results that allow us to shape the world around us. I’ll take the theory seriously once it produces paradigm-shifting results instead of listing things the acolytes “just don’t believe” or “just have doubts about.”

Flat Earther Dies In Rocket Crash
''assumes'' means they dont know for sure.

how about video evidence?

I'm not a scientist, but it would be really odd if the earth was flat considering we can actually see the shape of the moon and other planets. Unless telescopes are an elaborate ruse.
just because stuff up there is round doesnt mean we live on a ball.

and here I am

Assuming the camera is fixed on the moon. Is it ?

Anyways, have a good BBQ today ! I'll see you on the dark side of the moon ... :)

They're all flat discs, that happen to be perfectly aligned so they "appear" round when viewed from Earth, because Earth is the center of the Universe.

Some people yearn for days gone by. Flat earthers just yearn for the 1400s 😅

All of the familiar behavior of vacuum chambers is on a small scale and it's more difficult to visualize the atmosphere this way. A 'Flat Earther' should still be able to derive a kinetic theory of gases relatable to pressure. They can also derive the gravitational constant using a torsional balance. Combine the two and the density of an atmosphere with elevation is obtained.

tinfoil hat timmy tinfoil hat timmy a better example. Suppose you climb a mountain carrying a sealed container that was open at zero elevation, such as a shampoo bottle. Why should there be such an obviously reduced pressure at the top of the mountain? There are no partitions and the air is free to equilibrate. If you actually measure the pressure at a series of elevations, you will see it follows the model and hopefully you can be convinced before running out of air.
