I hope everyone realizes how good they have it. Theres lots of fucked up stuff going on in the world. There are many good things too.

Eggs for instance. Cant forget ''prison'' nachos. Also Vicodin.

I'm watching Little House On The Prairie and it's the 2 part episode where Mary, having gone blind loses her baby in a fire at the blind school where she's teaching.

So. Theres that. You're not Mary.

Looks like the first 60 posts were in under a minute, but as of 46 minutes after the hour, still hadn’t hit 100 posts yet.

Aside from the folks who might think the preorder would stay open for a week (they should know better this time), whoever wanted a K20 should have had the opportunity to get one.

I sat on this and hemmed and haw'd for almost 5 hours before I caved in and got in on one 😭

You will 100% not regret it one bit. Now, for the next year, be sure to get a sheath for it because the sword will just be secured into a box (very well like all their products), azwelke azwelke was making kydex for these and cpirtle cpirtle made leather sheaths and should be making more at some point.

You made a wise choice!

A work associate this morning asked me a question that I had a hard time answering so I'll ask for input here.

Since the 1980s what significant INVENTIONS have been created? Not advancements in current tech level of things, but a NEW thing like TV or the Internal combustion engine.

I was going to say electric motors but those have been around for a while. Then I settled on the tech advancement of polymers and plastics getting better because I couldnt think of a true invention in my lifetime.

Wierd. Let me know what you come up with. (I'm leaving at noon today)

GPS is 1978, maybe that still counts.

Others, incomplete list, of course:

- Online shopping (1980)
- Laptop (1981)
- Computational Physics (1981 / Richard Feynman / "Simulating Physics with Computers")
- First widely available cell phone (1983 by Motorola), i.e., no suitcase or car to host it
- DNA fingerprinting (1984)
- Prozak (1987)
- First heart stents approved (1994)
- IEEE 802.16, i.e. Internet, DSL, etc., over antennas (2001)

Here is an interesting one, dear to me but obscure:

– First deterministic polynomial time algorithm to determine whether a given number is prime (2002)
=> Enables modern large key encryption, used everywhere, from your iPhone SMS, banking, bitcoin, etc., etc.

Etc.

Smartphones, without a doubt.

Literally pocket supercomputers. Current generation smartphones are orders of magnitude more powerful than what NASA used to do the calculations for the moon landing.

Smartphones + the internet, are THE biggest things I can think of, since 1980.

Sadly, much like nuclear power, and other incredibly powerful advancements, it opened up incredible opportunities that could be positive, or negative.

The advent of the first iPhone, specifically, and all smartphones nowadays, is linked directly to a steady rise in depression and psychological and emotional issues in youths (which continued into their adulthood).

While social media apps were created to allow people to connect more easily, there’s more and more evidence of an inverse effect wrt to the amount of time people (especially younger, more psychologically and emotionally vulnerable individuals) spend on social media.

And as it turns out, despite the… naive claiming that ready access to information (or the lack of), is what separates the successful, from the less fortunate, the reality is that even with people having access to the internet and the abundance of information at their fingertips, most people don’t use that ability to learn a damned thing. They just use it to waste time (and simultaneously reduce the amount of time spent on in-person social and interpersonal interactions).

*** I remember going out to hang out with a group of friends, over a decade ago, and at one point in the night, saw that the group of about 8 people, was literally embodying the meme where everyone in the group, who conceivably went out to interact and spend time with one another, were ALL simultaneously on their smartphones, not interacting with anyone else.

Yes, the thought did pop into my head, “What’s the point of ‘going out’, just to ignore everyone else, and play/text/chat on your smartphones? Could’ve just done that at home”. 😕
